Seven Days in June

By Tia Williams

Eva Williams is a single mother and a writer of romantic novels. At a literary event, she runs into Shane Williams, a highly venerated novelist and the two form an international connection. What most people don’t know is that 15 years ago, Eva and Shane had spent a week together, infatuated with each other. In the present the two try to rekindle their romance but past demons haunt them. 👩🏾‍❤️‍👨🏾

I had seen this recommended a lot on Instagram and picked it up from my local bookstore because I really wanted to read some good romance. This book is absolutely delightful, with a palpable central romance and some really well written characters. It explores themes of racism and gives an insight into the African American community but at the same time it doesn’t dehumanise them and like with a lot of books centred around black characters, it doesn’t exploit their trauma. ❤️

It’s funny and charming, and quite a quick read. My one gripe with this book is that the prose gets very pop culture heavy slightly too often and that can take away from the reading experience but it’s never overkill. 📚

My rating: 4⭐️/5⭐️

Project Hail Mary

By Andy Weir

Ryland Grace is a middle school science teacher. One day he wakes up on an isolated spaceship next to the bodies of two dead crewmates and with amnesia. Using his scientific background and with the help of an unlikely friend he encounters, he must find a way to return to Earth and save it from crisis. 🚀

I watched this film back in March, loved it dearly and decided to give the book a shot. I’m not someone who reads a lot of science fiction, so this was uncharted territory for me but this book was a delight! I particularly loved Weir’s quippy prose and his dedication to making this as scientifically accurate as possible. It’s funny and heartfelt and the bond between the two main characters is so heartwarming.👽

If I were to have any complaints with this one then I’d say it dragged on a wee bit too much for my liking. It also helped me to have watched the film before this because the scientific jargon was quite complex (even though I’m a biologist myself the physics bits were especially tricky to grasp).🧪

Would recommend doing a double feature of this with the film!

My rating: 4⭐️/5⭐️

I think this is my quickest turnaround on a tag ever! The marvellous @barbbookedup tagged me in this one just a few days ago and now here is my stack of book recs for each letter of the alphabet.

I could have picked multiple books for so many of these, but alas the letter X was as elusive as it was for so many others; so I tried to represent it in my song choice.

Any X book recs?

Tagged a few people who might want to join in! Also, sorry to The Unworthy which didn’t fully get its moment, but there was no way I was bothering to fix the flub today. 🤷🏼‍♀️

🌻🌷Match your flowers Stack 🌷🌻 Thank you, @sirenbee_readsnthings 🌻🌷🧡🧡 for tagging me. It gave me the perfect excuse to get some flowers and do some long pending photoshoot for reviews. 🤭

Flowers sure light up my day!

Not to sound redundant, but I sure am going to keep photo stocks for upcoming review posts. 🤭🫠🫠 I'm tagging some friends further to continue with the positive vibes.

Q- What are some of your favorite flowers? Or A book cover that reminds you of a flower. (Like every yellow book with black or brown fonts on it reminds me of a sunflower.)

Book Spotlight 📖: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

It's my first time picking up a book by this author, and I can confidently say that she is an incredible storyteller. I felt joy, sadness, mad, torn for these characters... it's a story that'll stay with me like how the Kite Runner did, even 20 years later.

Similar to the Kite Runner, it's a childhood friendship born in the middle of chaos, one that's tested in many ways. Elena Greco was drawn to Lila Cerullo as she modeled and behaved the way Elena wished she had the courage to. The story is divided into childhood and adolescent chapters as we see these girls navigate life in the turbulent streets of Naples - in a neighborhood that runs on violence and corruption. They battle wanting to help each other but also secretly competing to be better than the other being in an era where girls are already at a disadvantage and not left with much of a choice (having to give up education, marry early, forced to help run business and house chores, etc). You see both of their lives land on different paths despite starting at the same line and the complexity of their friendship continues to grow.

I don't want to give much away as I believe it's truly worth reading 📖💭

I also binged season 1 of the HBO show - they adapted the novel brilliantly *check trigger warnings though, not an easy watch ⚠️. The characters all came to life and that made this reading journey all the more memorable.

The last clip... some of the best acting I've seen on screen by this cast. If you've read this book, you already know what that's about.

@sunlitpages_ has a great review on this
And @comereadwithmay as well (we both read this at the same time) 🤍

Of course, my pick is South Korea 🇰🇷🥰 a perfect balance of modern and traditional

Travelling for me looks a little different now. There are days I put aside just to find local spots to unwind and take it easy to balance the exploring days. My soul craves it.

How Many Words Challenge 🔢

The goal is to see many words in a title you can get up to. And I made this way too hard on myself 🫠 I didn't let myself use books with "The" at the beginning or subtitles at the end, and so no textbooks, anthologies or non-fiction. So, I only got up to 7.

Books featured 📚
1️⃣_Timequake_ by Kurt Vonnegut
2️⃣_Cat's Eye_ by Margaret Atwood
3️⃣_Song of Solomon_ by Toni Morrison
4️⃣_Quiet Days in Clichy_ by Henry Miller
5️⃣_In Other Rooms, Other Wonders_ by Daniyal Mueenuddin
6️⃣_Further Interpretations of Real-Life Events_ by Kevin Moffett
7️⃣_Tunneling to the Center of the Earth_ by Kevin Wilson

// Use your predictive text to create the longest title you can while having it still make sense!

🏷️ Thanks @reading.for.three for tagging me! Tagging some folks so feel free to play along! If you see this, consider yourself tagged 🫶
