Exotic Romances #28
Quality Comics, 4/56
CGC 8.0 (Creme to Off-White pages)
Matt Baker cover and interior art
Sole Highest Graded on CGC Census

A slice of Golden Age romance history for you! This issue carries a stunning cover by the legendary Matt Baker, one of the era’s most influential “good girl art” illustrators — and one of the first Black artists to break into mainstream comics.

Born Clarence Matthew Baker on December 10, 1921, in Forsyth County, North Carolina, and raised in Homestead, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. He was one of the first Black comic book artists to find success in the industry, breaking into a field that offered few opportunities to Black creators at the time. Close friends noted he was gay, something he kept private given the times.

Jerry Iger hired him on the spot after seeing just one color sketch — a woman he thought was so beautiful he brought Baker on immediately. His first confirmed work was on a “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle” story in Jumbo Comics #69, November 1944. Baker became known as one of the best “Good Girl” artists in the business, prized for the detail and realism he brought to female characters

A childhood bout of rheumatic fever damaged his heart, and he died of a heart attack at just 37 years old on August 11, 1959. Over his career he drew more than 1,000 pages of comics and over 200 covers.

Quality Comics shuttered by the end of 1956, making Baker’s romance covers for the publisher some of his rarest and most sought-after work,
including this beautiful military romance cover which stands as the single highest graded copy on the CGC census and a proud part of the ToddFather Collection!✨

The Upper Canada Mall Hobby Expo delivered a massive turnout. Nothing beats having two industry powerhouses under one roof. The event may be over, but this clip was too good not to share. Comic Doctor had just wrapped his interview when Peter ran into him, and there is plenty more on the way. Stay locked in because the full Comic Doctor interview and more Expo highlights are coming soon.
