The sun rises and sets with women who meet you in your mess.

They’re the ones who help you pack up your life and start a new one. Who show up with their own cleaning supplies, their own boxes, ready for whatever task awaits them in a home that is no longer yours. Who help you close the chapters you don’t need to keep rereading. Who hold the mirror up to the best and most challenging parts of yourself — and don’t look away from either.

Real friendship lives in these moments. Because anyone can have a good time over cocktails. Anyone can extend brunch past two hours, can enjoy the trip, can show up for the highlight reel. But the ones who can do all of that and show up when everything is heavy and hard and unglamorous? That is friendship. That is the essence of womanhood.

These are the women who give you exactly what you need — without you ever having to ask.

Women’s friendships are also, often, the most hard-won. Society has spent a long time telling us to compete with each other, to measure ourselves against one another, to misunderstand each other before we even try. It wants us pitted against one another. And the greatest antidote to all of that is choosing — actively, fiercely, with every piece of yourself — to meet each other where you are. To see each other clearly and lift each other up anyway.

That is what these women (and so many more) have done for me. And what I can only hope I can return in this lifetime.

This one is for the women in my life who have loved me through it — loudly and quietly, from up close and afar. You are the reason I believe in the kind of love that doesn’t leave.

The sun rises and sets with you.
