Now in its third week, the Youth Inclusion Initiative Summer Program is in full swing!! Under the leadership of Supervisor Dawn Stokes and Assistant Supervisor Tracie McCummings, the program has once again elevated its support for participating youth. Through hands-on experiences like shadowing scientists and engineers, participants are deepening their understanding of the environment and exploring exciting career paths.

Octavia Sutphin, President of the Trenton-based Neighborhood Improvement Association:
“This marks the Neighborhood Improvement Association’s third year participating in the Youth Inclusion Initiative Summer Program, and it continues to provide underserved youth with meaningful and transformative experiences. With many eager to return each summer, expanding the program to include year-round opportunities could greatly enhance its long-term impact.”

So blessed to share that our 1st Mega Give Away event was a success! Shoppers started shopping for all the FREE items before we could completely set up the multiple types of food items, house cleaning and paper products, health & hygiene products & clothing. Our stock pile was full to the brim, we thought we had too much. Little did we know, we didn’t have enough, our cupboard was bare by 1:00PM. We underestimated the power of gifting. It felt amazing to know we were providing a need that many seemed to appreciate.

NIA members, NIA’s honorary members Jeannie Weakliam, Eastward Councilman Joe Harrison were on site as always, Jersey Cream helped drive this effort strong as always. My grandsons brought the noise loading trucks, my daughter and granddaughters, Mr. & Mrs. Carella, Mrs. Chacon all brought sweat equity; and then there is Andrew the energizing bunny, championing his way to make sure all seniors were good, personally filling their bags, carrying bags to cars across the parking lot the entire time, he never stopped.

It's important to mention those that helped make this possible with providing, and collecting donations, Mercer St. Friends, De ’Lite Hair Boutique, Jeremy’s Closet, Galilee Baptist Church, Carella Shoes HDR Inc, Our Lady of Sorrows & Saint Anthony’s Parish.

✨NIA's Board Member Spotlight✨

Our beloved Ms. Octavia Sutphin is one of the co-founders of NIA, which was founded in 2003. She says she created NIA to "initiate consistent, systemic investments in community residents, so they are self-motivated, contributing members of the communities, and leaders of our society." She has stayed involved in NIA, because it's important to her to see a positive change in the social fabric of our community, and her heart is in too deep to stop now. After retirement from the DEP, she has returned to the DEP as an independent contractor in the capacity of a Senior Accountant to present.

Fun Fact: Ms. Octavia is extremely creative with any project at hand!
