tomorrow kicks off @pittsburghcoffeeweek! ☕️

i had a really wonderful time at a sneak peak event at @commonplacecoffee - i never leave there without learning SO MUCH! the events this week will not only bring the coffee community together, but also be an opportunity to learn more about coffee and nerd out. i loved being able to sample pour overs at this event and learn about their origins and roasting process. 🤓

Ella is actually one of my oldest friends.

We met in kindergarten at Linden Elementary School when we were just 4 years old. Both Ella and I have late birthdays: me in November, Ella in December—so we were always the “young ones.”

Who could have imagined back then that she would choose one of my paintings to bring into her home.

Even better…after all these years, to be able to still call Ella my friend…remarkable ☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼

Happy October Friends!! A little recents + review 📖🍂🫖☕✨

RECENTS: Walking around the north side in the rain looking at all the leaves and pretty buildings, chai and reading time at my favorite coffee shop, soup + over the garden wall night with friends, and slowing down and getting ready for chilly weather once again 🍁🎃

REVIEW: Karro by @jennymustard 5/5 ⭐

A modern retelling of Anna Karenina, I was immersed in Karro. Incredible dialogues, stream of consciousness style, and oozing with seduction and self sabotage, I could not stop reading.

OVERVIEW
I went in blind and so should you, given the chance. If you like messy reads and wrestling with the human condition, you'll like it.

If you've read any of Mustard's other books, you'll find this one in a league of it's own. What makes Karro stand out is a new writing style, I found similar to Katie Kitamura but more digestible, like Mustard let loose her creative flow straight onto the page. I flew through the pages that all melted together, slipping between dialogues and the decomposing metal state of our protagonist.

I have not read Anna Karenina nor did look up anything about it until after finishing. I find it stands perfectly well on its own, so don't worry if you don't know the original, it will just make your read through all the more thrilling.

READ IF YOU LOVE

- all vibes no plot
- unlikeable main characters
