What if the thing you love outside your major becomes your career?

For @scotticenogle, studying communication and playing in the Hawkeye Marching Band helped shape a career in music and entertainment.

After working as the original DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and producing music for major artists, this CLAS alum is bringing his talents back to Iowa.

His latest project? "Ode to Voxman," an original orchestral composition inspired by his Iowa memories and created in collaboration with longtime music production partner @liorrosner_.

Scott's advice to students? "Never lose touch with that other thing that you're excited about doing, because it balances you."

Your interests don't have to fit into one box. Sometimes, they come together in ways you never expected. A large orchestra rehearsal featuring numerous musicians playing various instruments such as strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The conductor stands at the center, facing the orchestra. The room is spacious with soundproofing panels and music stands scattered across the floor.

The @PatMcAfeeShow is filming live from campus today! One of the show's producers is Ty Schmit, a CLAS alumnus who majored in communications studies and cinematic arts.

Schmit credits the variety of classes he took at Iowa with giving him the confidence to take risks and pursue a career in writing and entertainment after college. University of Iowa graduate Ty Schmit speaks on the set of the Pat McAfee show.

📣 Calling all writers, filmmakers, artists, comedians, and cultural critics!

Join us this fall for our latest iteration of “The Big Binge (CSI:1325),” where we will learn what it takes to conceptualize, write, produce, and release a television series with acclaimed writer and showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg! This October, Bob-Waksberg will screen a season of his hit animated show, BoJack Horseman, which tells the story of a former sitcom star horse who plans his return to the limelight by writing his tell-all autobiography (with the help of a ghostwriter). The show (starring Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, and Alison Brie, among others) has been called “hilarious and ribald” by the New York Times, and is ranked third on the A.V. Club’s “50 Best TV Comedies since 2000.”

The class will include screenings of BoJack Horseman episodes, substantive analysis of scene work, process and craft discussions, special guests, and supplemental materials from Bob-Waksberg’s archive. For the best experience, students should not watch (or rewatch) the TV show in advance of the class.

The class is open to all students across the university, but limited spots are available. Please pass this information along to your students, colleagues, and listservs, and remind individuals who do not get a seat to add their name to the waitlist (we may adjust enrollment as demand increases).

I am a DMA student in Trombone Performance focusing on new and contemporary music. I am originally from Orlando, FL, but have spent the last few years in the Midwest. I hold an undergraduate degree with a double major in English and Music from Florida State University and love finding reasons to implement both studies. I enjoy giving students the tools to learn and grow their own abilities, hoping to make me (the instructor) as obsolete as possible! Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, running, and reading, and spending time with my wife and my dog.

You did it! 🎓✨
We’re so proud of each and every student preparing to celebrate their upcoming graduation, but we’re especially proud of our first-gen grads. 💛🖤 Congratulations! 🎉

To celebrate, we asked campus partners to share 5 words every first-gen grad deserves to hear—and wow, did they deliver. 💬

This video shares messages of pride, affirmation, and celebration—no voices, just powerful words. Because sometimes a few written words say everything. ✨

We hope you enjoy this small gift from us to you. 💛🎓 (hint: sound on...no voices but there is cute 🎶)

P.S. Thank you to all our campus partners who contributed to this video!
