POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I received the Performing Lines newsletter last week which included the feature ‘Strategies for Diversity’ and I wanted to share a few thoughts!

This case study was conducted by Community Arts Network against the backdrop of Performing Lines WA production of ‘Layla Majnun’. The focus of this study features the intentionality behind the work done by Performing Lines WA to diversify their teams, productions and audiences.

As a visible Muslim from a CaLD background who loves the theatre - who finds so much joy and meaning in this space - I was so pleased at the release of this case study. This work is so, so important; creating space and fostering representation with and for marginalised communities is such a leap in the right direction. Theatre is a powerful tool of storytelling, of healing, and my community specifically has always been missing from this space. As someone who wears the hijab, this has always been apparent the moment I step into the theatre. The buzz created by ‘Layla Majnun’ within the Perth Muslim community was unparalleled. Not only did almost everybody recognise the story from their own traditions but so many showed up. I’ve never seen so many people from my community at the theatre and I’ve definitely never blended into the background of a theatre audience! This production created such a welcoming atmosphere and accommodating space. It highlighted that there is a demand for these stories and that people will show up for narratives they identify with.

It is so incredibly wonderful to see Performing Lines WA paving the way and putting in the effort to create a culture of inclusive theatre. Love, love, love. @perflineswa ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀

2009 - 2019
I started Act Out - an arts based community development business - in 2007. - -
I used theatre to help communities deal with difficult issues and obstacles.
With this beautiful group of young women from the Australian Islamic College we looked st social exclusion and living in a different culture.
It’s been one of my favourite jobs to date.

How can we FLOCK better? Had a fantastic event Monday! Super insightful, fun and focused exchange considering the future of FLOCK and the collectivity, generosity and resourcefulness of our Perth arts ecology. ‘There’s lots of life but not enough water...’ Thanks to all who came.

Inspiring and insightful presentation. A pleasure to see the vision, action and direction of the Arts organisations of Australia welcoming, embracing and appreciating that all cultures present in Australia can only make Australia culture and the arts stronger, richer and colourful. Australia is currently composed by Aboriginals and UK first immigrants waves 54% and new immigrants 46%. The “magic” is already beginning as we start recognising us more as a flavourful “milkshake” instead of a “fruit salad”. Interacting, mixing, finding connection points is essencial to create new expressions with strong and multiple cultural roots. I love Perth. I love Australia. I love to be part of this movement. #connectiondot #australia #perth #culture #arts #artsandculture #multiculturalism #diversity #inclusivity #music #immigrants #aboriginal #uk #worldmusic #australianmusic

One in three Australians were born overseas and more than 300 languages are spoken in Australian homes yet Australia’s diversity is not yet fully reflected in our arts or in the organisations that make up our sector.

Over the next three years the Chamber is partnering with Community Arts Network to deliver a series of professional development events to increase awareness and concrete action that leads to the arts and culture sector being more inclusive and better representative of WA’s population.

Join us at this session on Diversity in the Arts with Australia Council for the Arts CEO Adrian Collette, Multicultural Arts Victoria CEO Veronica Pardo and CAN's Diversity Manager Zheela Vokes.

Adrian will be discussing the diversity strategies the Australia Council has committed to in it five year strategy, why diversity has become a priority area for the Australia Council and how the Council plans on implementing strategies addressing diversity.

Veronica will talk about her organisation’s state-wide strategy to create meaningful change in the sector, successes and challenges, the Diversify Your Arts program, and what an effective model for addressing diversity within the broader sector might be.

Zheela will look at best practice, sharing case studies from Western Australian arts organisations.

We had such a beautiful time talking about diverse books with these wonderful people at the @communityartsnetwork Story Street Pot-Luck Book Party last week. Everyone brought a diverse or #OwnVoices book and talked about why they loved it. Facilitated by @sunili, there were really vulnerable and open discussions, and it was such a privilege to be a part of it.
.
There is another one this Thursday 24th Oct, 5:30 at the Cannington Library, and then another one next week, Thurs 31st Oct at the Bentley Library. Check eventbrite for more details and come along!

[Image 1 is a selfie taken by Johnny that skilfully manages to include 10 people, many of them holding up great books. Image 2 is the same people all sitting in a little couch circle and chatting, with the empty library behind them (not going to lie, being in a library after closing was thrilling!)]

🌍 Throwback to a special project where we got to hear and see from @ercwa children what the 30 articles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights meant for them in developing these pocketguides and seeing the children’s reaction to see their work launching for the 70th anniversary of HR Day was incredible and emotional ☺️Seeing this again makes me excited to work on more projects where we can be more inclusive of our community! For now, if you’re interested check out @mftwa to hear their stories!! 🎙🖥🖌 ps pocketguides proudly designed by @draw.history team 😁
