How can communities put power back in neighbourhoods?

Power needs to stay with residents, and community-led planning means residents help decide what gets funded, guide how projects are implemented, and review whether those projects are creating meaningful impact for their neighbourhoods.

An investment of $45 million per year could fund community-led planning across all 158 Toronto neighbourhoods, which is just 0.05% of Toronto’s 2026 budget.

When residents lead, investment follows local priorities.

🔙 ✨ Looking back on an inspiring FutureBUILDS Leadership Lab! 🏘️🎨

This summer, we welcomed Black youth (ages 19–32) for a day of learning, creativity, and community through our Blueprint of Block Building Leadership Lab.

Hosted at Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN), the day began with a site visit to the Lawrence Heights Revitalization Project, generously supported by Toronto Community Housing. Participants had the opportunity to see nonprofit and affordable housing development in action while learning about the importance of community-led development.

Back at TCBN, participants brought their ideas to life through painting, clay, stenciling, and natural materials, reimagining what home, belonging, and thriving communities can look like.

The Leadership Lab was about more than exploring careers in nonprofit and affordable housing. It was about empowering the next generation of Black leaders to imagine, create, and build more equitable communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and to our partners for helping make this experience possible. 💙

FutureBUILDS is a real estate development initiative seeking to support early- and mid-career Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC), who are interested in real estate development professionally or launching entrepreneurial ventures in the industry. With support and funding from the Government of Canada's Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures, Monumental developed and implemented the first BIPOC Real Estate Development Incubator in Canada in partnership with the University of Toronto’s Infrastructure Institute. Informed by research conducted by Monumental on the experiences of racialized individuals in the real estate development sector, FutureBUILDS seeks to catalyse new thinking, agility and ideas into the sector by engaging BIPOC entrepreneurs and innovators who are passionate about solving issues of access to housing and housing affordability.

What a day! ☀️ Neighbours came together as families to enjoy a beautiful afternoon outdoors. From longtime residents to newcomers, children to students, it was wonderful to see our community connecting, laughing, and making memories.

With the sun shining, one great idea that came out of the gathering was to add shade sails to the courtyard, making the space even more welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

Thank you Malvern. We can't wait to see you at our next community event!

💛🔨 Thank You to Our Gold Sponsor – Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN)! 🔨💛

For the love of soccer, we demand better for our city! ⚽

The 2026 World Cup will generate billions of dollars in profits, yet our governments have failed to ensure we benefit from it. FIFA can afford to create good jobs and not rely on unpaid work. FIFA could have helped us build a better Toronto.

Join us in standing up for our city, our people, and our services.

#FIFA2026 #toronto #DecentWork #PayUpFIFA We’re giving FIFA and Toronto a red card for: Unpaid Work While we appreciate the World Cup in bringing communities together, exploiting unpaid workers doesn’t need to be part of the game.

Celebrating a Major Milestone

Today, I want to celebrate my mentee, Souad Lautfi, on successfully earning her PMP® certification before the new certification changes take effect this July. What an incredible accomplishment!

Our journey began unexpectedly at a @communitybenefits event where I was volunteering and supporting an event being held. After hearing some insights I shared during the Q&A session, Souad reached out to me. We met for lunch, and she shared that my words resonated with her and asked if I would be her mentor.

That moment reminded me of something so important. You never know who is watching, listening, or being inspired by you.

Sometimes, we underestimate the impact our voice, experiences, and authenticity can have on others. A simple interaction, a few encouraging words, or showing up as your genuine self can open doors you never imagined.

This is why representation matters. When we show up, share our stories, and pour into others, we create pathways for someone else to believe they can do it too.

Souad, I am incredibly proud of your dedication, discipline, and commitment to achieving this goal. This certification is more than three letters behind your name. It''s a reflection of your perseverance, resilience, and belief in yourself.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. The mentor-mentee relationship is always a reminder that we grow together.

🫵Keep showing up.
🫵Keep asking questions.
🫵Keep betting on yourself.

Because you never know whose life you'll change simply by being present.

"Representation is not about being seen; it's about helping others see what's possible."

Congratulations again, Souad! Your future is bright.
