・ I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but even at my age, I don’t think I had ever truly understood what it meant to feel grateful to my ancestors. Of course, I had always felt some sense of gratitude toward them. But I could never really put into words what exactly I was grateful for. Recently, however, I heard a story from my family that completely changed the way I see things. My family name, “Kamo,” was apparently chosen by my ancestors in order to protect themselves from being sent off to war—to protect their own lives. I don’t know exactly how they changed it, or whether what they did was even legal at the time. But there is one thing I do know. Because of the decision they made, I am alive today. Considering the values and social expectations of that time, refusing to go to war may have meant being condemned as someone who had betrayed their country. And yet, I believe they made that choice to protect their own lives—and to keep those lives connected to the generations that would come after them, including mine. When I think about the possibility that, had they not changed our name to “Kamo,” I might not even be here today, I feel something welling up inside me that is difficult to put into words. I think I finally understand why we should be grateful to those who came before us. Because every life we have today exists only because life was passed down to us, generation after generation, by our ancestors. It may have taken me a long time to realize this, but from now on, I want to learn how this life was passed down to me and make sure that story is passed on to the generations that come after me. And I want to live my own life proudly, carrying this name—and carrying my gratitude for those who made my life possible. #FamilyHistory #Ancestors #Ancestry #Gratitude #familylegacy

Goshi shares Japanese culture and sensibility through comedy, continually asking what the spirit of wa—the Japanese idea of harmony—truly means. Zane moved from New York to Japan and immersed himself in its culture. Through both lived experience and an outsider’s perspective, he reminds us of things that we, as Japanese people, may be beginning to forget. Drawn to Japan, Axel combines exceptional video-editing skills with a deep love for the country, sharing its appeal with the world through film. Three creators with different backgrounds and forms of expression came together around one shared desire: to make Japanese culture feel more accessible, engaging, and fun. With SHIN NIPPON as their setting, their different perspectives and sensibilities came together in a single comedy video. I am grateful that this space could become a place for expressing Japanese culture and sensibility, beyond simply serving food. Watching the three of them, I found myself thinking that perhaps the spirit of wa is not about bec
