Biasing the intrinsics🦶🏼
Abductor hallucis & flexor hallucis brevis (FHB)

This post will focus on the abductor hallucis 👣One of the key intrinsic muscles of your foot with the biggest cross-sectional area

🏋️ HOW CAN WE TRAIN IT?

NMES can help where there’s inhibition ⚡️

Around 70% of people cannot actively abduct (spread) their big toe!

The challenge lies in the AbH’s complex morphology. Its distinct architectural fiber arrangements & the requirement for synchronous recruitment of motor units.
All these things make it difficult for many to achieve full conscious activation 🧠

The good news is that this muscle (in combination with FHB & others) also flexes the big toe, so if you’re flexing and maintaining good alignment (not falling into adduction), you’re using it 🙌🏼

Strengthening the AbH and the rest of the foot is vital, especially for slowing progression of issues like Hallux Valgus, which affects nearly 20% of adults aged 18 to 65. But it can also significantly help sporting performance when trained as part of a comprehensive F&A programme ⛹🏿‍♂️🤾🏾🤼‍♂️

The “toe spread” exercise has shown effectiveness in specifically activating and strengthening the AbH, but can you do it? As discussed - most people can’t. Because of this, I often don’t end up giving it as an exercise to my patients, I use exercises that are more ‘functional’ - in weight bearing with an element of balance, where the AbH works in a more organic way:

🔹It’s designed to work in closed chain, absorb bodyweight forces & control postural sway, so we should train it that way!

🔹Forward lean calf raises & heavy toe extension presses have been shown to create more torque through the joint leading to true strength gains 💪🏼

26 marathons, 17 Majors and 2 @chimarathon . 🏃‍♀️❤️

If you had told me 9 years ago that all of this would be possible, I would have said no way!

But God has surprised me in more ways than I could ever imagine. Every step of this journey has reminded me that with faith and prayer, so much more is possible than we think.

What’s my secret? Faith and prayer. 🙏🏼

And if God can surprise me, He can surprise you too. Never stop believing in what He can do in your life. ❤️

A huge thank you to @compex_uk and @abbottglobal for being part of this incredible journey. I’m so grateful to have you by my side. 🫶🏼
