I have never been a summer fan. Maybe I would be, if I lived in Scotland, or Iceland, where the months of summer require the wearing of sweaters and coats. Crisp, chilly, pep-in-your-step summers, those I can get behind. As such, having been home with Alistair for weeks now, while it swelters outside, has left me missing not one thing, in my mind. But then a cold front blew thru the Blue Ridge mountains this past weekend, and with it the feel of autumn in the air (though I know it's only a tease), was enough to draw me out of the cove. Saturday that translated to crepes and a stop at the farmers market, while today, following a check up for Alistair (8 pounds, 12.5 ounces!), that meant a long visit out at @hickorynutgap with @glennbenglish, @comptoncat, and @adri.oli. Delicious food, pristine setting, glorious company, and cool breezes. Summer in the mountains, I might just learn to love you.

You know those simple things in life? The ones that are so easy and everyday and commonplace as to slip beneath the radar undetected most days but which, upon closer examination, bring profound joy? Well, that's me and flowers. I don't make enough time for flowers, but, oh, when I do. Then my eye twitch subsides a bit, the one I have whenever I've taken on more than is truly manageable (and which I've had now for the past several weeks). My shoulders relax a bit, my breath comes easier. Yesterday, my buddy @annielouiseperkinson invited me to her inaugural flower arranging class at the stunning veggie and flower farm that she and her husband Isaiah run, @flying3348. There, in the company of several other flower-loving ladies, Annie walked the fields with us, sharing information and advice on growing and arranging organically-grown flowers. Then, she set us loose with scissors to cut whatever spoke to us. We reconvened afterwards at the prep shelter to arrange our gleanings into bouquets and flower crowns, while we sipped and snacked on farm-raised mojitos and nibbles, and shared tips on books to read and movies to view. I really should incorporate flowers more into what we grow here in the cove. Beautiful, and presenting profound release in their beauty, they silently offer the cure to whatever ails you. 🌷🌼🌸🌹💐🌻🌺
