Daydreaming of your next surf trip?

Jailbreaks sits in front of Himmafushi island’s jail. Until recently it was technically illegal to surf it.

An hour from the airport, and a walk from the guesthouse.

São Miguel isn’t exactly known for being subtle. Especially when it comes to choosing a colour for a house. Greens, blues, yellows and combinations that probably weren’t in the catalogue. Colour is very much part of the island’s folk architecture. You just have to wander a little off the usual route.

Equatorial sun is not something you negotiate with.

Hours in the water, UV off every surface. Sunscreen alone doesn’t get you through that.

Ask anyone how to surf the Maldives and you’ll get the same answer: charter a boat.
Eric Sviratchev has never needed one.

Three trips in, his routine is set — fly into Malé, skip the seaplane, take the speedboat to Himmafushi, a local island with a world-class right-hander at the end of the street.

He documented the whole thing. We asked him how it works.
