ATAVISM •
/ˈadəˌvizəm/
•
The reappearance of a trait in an organism that was present in a remote ancestor but has been missing for one or more generations •
On a biological level, Atavism is commonly referred to as an “Evolutionary Throwback”. •
Atavism occurs only when latent genetic code from past ancestors is switched back on during development.
• For @jumpman23 one problem always remains. How can we honor the past, but move toward the future? Pressing the “retro” button one too many times, can lead to diminishing returns. How can we tip the cap, and flip the script at the same time? ATAVISM looms. • Concepts explored by hand, in Sketchbook Pro, and @vizcom_ More at SturgeM.com • • #footweardesign #industrialdesign #jordan #nike #ckinspiration

Nike Just Got Kicked Out Of The S&P 100 After 18 Years. Stock down 78% from its 2021 peak. Trading at $38. $230 billion in market cap erased. And on September 21st — removed from the S&P 100 after an 18-year run. The four companies replacing them? Dell. Palo Alto Networks. Arista Networks. SanDisk. Every single one from tech. That’s not just a Nike story. That’s a story about what America’s economy is becoming. But here’s where Nike’s story gets really interesting. Nike made one of the biggest strategic mistakes of the last decade. In 2020 they launched the Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy — aggressively cutting wholesale partners like Foot Locker and Dick’s Sporting Goods to sell directly to consumers. Cut out the middleman. Keep more margin. Own the customer relationship. It backfired badly. Nike Direct revenue fell 13%. Digital declined 20%. Revenue dropped from $51.4 billion to $46.3 billion. They gutted the wholesale relationships that built the brand — and didn’t replace them with enough direct demand. And while Nike was busy trying to become a DTC brand — On Running, Hoka, New Balance, and Adidas were quietly eating their lunch. Now they’re rebuilding wholesale. Patching relationships they deliberately broke. Trying to win back shelf space they voluntarily gave up. The turnaround is underway under CEO Elliott Hill. But the market is not waiting. Here’s the business lesson worth paying attention to. Nike didn’t fail because the product got worse. They failed because they misread the relationship between distribution and demand. They thought they could manufacture demand directly. The market told them otherwise. The swoosh is still one of the most powerful brands on earth. But even iconic brands can make strategic mistakes that take years to unwind. Revisited some of my sneaker designs from 2018-2020 and got curious about how they’d look rendered realistically. Still pretty wild seeing old concepts come to life in seconds. #SneakerDesign #SneakerConcept #SneakerDesigner #FootwearDesign #SneakerCulture

Nike Air Nucleus concept. Just wanted to have some more fun with the idea of “what Nike Air could try” I had a while back. Bring back flyknit. Keep it clean. Foam carrier midsole + soft foam core inside + outer airbag shell including traction. Why not. #footweardesign#footwearconcept#nikeair#nike
