Whoa… What a year 2025 has been for Urchin. We’ve now been operating for 1 1/2 years and even though we are still a tiny operation, we have made it further and served more bagels than we ever thought possible.

It’s all thanks to the people of Ventura and the community we have formed through our boiled dough. Waking up hours before the sun rises and doing dishes till the sun goes down isn’t easy work. But hearing people say they love our bagels is all the motivation we need to keep this pirate ship of a bagel shop going.

We really couldn’t have done this without the support of our community. We love y’all ♥️

A special thanks to @fluidstate and @theduncan for their immense support in making our operation possible. Supporting our small business with a place to bake and sell has been a game changer and allowed us to imagine our full potential. Small businesses supporting small businesses is the true spirit of Ventura and they’ve lived up to that tenfold. THANK YOU!

We’ve got big things in the works for 2026 and there is no place we’d rather be doing it than in Ventura with all of you! We love you all thanks for the support! 🥯 ♥️ 🥯

It’s a real honor to have been involved with this project. When I look at these photos, I see the nuance of Connor and his lovely wife Chelsea sampling America, which they did by spending a few years living in New York, New York; Hilo, Hawaii; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Missoula, Montana - though the work is not limited to these places. Perhaps it’s best described in his words:

“Made between 2021 and 2023, this body of work showcases the peculiarity of American life as seen through quotidian moments and landscapes. Fruited Plains depicts a 1,000-yard view of the country as a whole and the myriad of experiences that make up its fabric. With a deep appreciation for the ordinary and moments of solitude, these photographs reveal subtle and poetic moments that are often overlooked.”

We are pleased to announce the extension of our current exhibition, Fruited Plains, by J. Connor Sacks.

Please join us this coming Friday, July 11, for an officially unofficial book fair happy hour. Opening our doors right after @sfartbookfair closes for the day. We will be hanging out in the space and joined by the artist from 6–9PM.

NEW PHASE OF URCHIN UNLOCKED! We’re happy to announce that we are now going to be catering on the patio of Fluid State in downtown Ventura every Saturday and Sunday! Please join us this Saturday May 24th 9am-1pm or sellout for our grand (soft) opening!!! This will also mark Urchin’s 1 year anniversary! A party indeed!

We’re excited to chat with you about the vision and somethings we have in the works! Expect some of your fav bagels, pour over coffees, a raffle, and a small batch of merch YA MERCH!!! We can’t tell you how much all the support means to this little bagel fam. More info to follow this week!

Sneaking a few titles on the @bookandjobgallery table this weekend for LAABF @printedmatter_artbookfairs !

If you’re in LA, don’t miss your chance to grab a copy of Fruited Plains by @condor_snacks , DEEP by @fromgrant , and Dutchman Be Lonely by @berlinbrrr at booth #O10. There will also be a limited amount of a special print edition by @awstain and @megankelso in the mix.

@carson_lancaster will be holding it down all weekend, with a special cast of rotating table-mates. Be sure to look through all the other projects being featured here and at our many friends’ respective tables.
