While it’s been difficult to maintain focus for reading longer works, I’ve been exploring poetry that resonates with where I’m at lately.

Let’s say you’re playing a game, perhaps a video game, where your character has a set amount of energy, and your task is to gather berries from the woods to replenish energy and survive.

The berries have become more scarce and harder to find, and there’s a jerk in charge of the executive branch of your government who has a warehouse full of berries for his cronies - so many that they rot - but wants more. He’s burning down the forest to try to prevent people from collecting berries. Many people’s berries have been stolen from their arms. You’re trying to allocate or save berries for people who don’t have any. Some people are hoarding as many berries as they can carry, more than they need.

Then there’s a monster who is in the forest who is following you. The monster has caught up with you before, and you’re living with healed wounds from the effort to escape from the monster, but you’ve been trying to move faster and still collect berries when you find them, and leave enough for others. As you progress, the game speeds up and requires you to move faster, while you’re getting more worn out with energy levels dropping over time from the constant effort.

Pretty soon, you have a choice: pause to collect berries even if it means the monster catches you, and see how bad the damage is this time; or give up and allocate all your energy to outrunning the monster until your energy reserves are gone, and you drop.

Life feels like this lately, and I’m very tired.

Depression as a chronic illness has stolen a lot from my life over the years. For the past couple years I’ve seriously ramped up treatments, but the cost of constantly managing this disease (including juggling all the different appointments and care teams; providers who leave private practice requiring me to start over or source someone new; insurance approvals and medical bills; medication refills and controlled meds that legally can’t be refilled without an appointment each month; providers who recommend me to do more treatments that mean more travel, time off, and fatigue; dealing with side effects and not knowing when they will strike or resolve) is getting the best of me.

I’m tired of having to outrun it.

I don’t care about clothes the way I used to. I no longer pour over magazines and obsess over the latest trends. I don’t rush to the mall when the new collections hit the stores. I don’t compare how I dress to others. I no longer desire to dress for others approval.

I do care about how I feel in my clothes. I care deeply about who made my clothes. I’m thoughtful about the fabric and materials I choose to wear. I care about diversity and longevity of the pieces I have.

Having clothes in your wardrobe that you don’t have to think much about after you purchase them, new or thrifted, is a healthier relationship with your wardrobe. We should be mindful of the purchases we make, and then spend less time working to acquire more things, and instead put that energy into caring for the garments we have.

A day where I forgot to snap my usual outfit-of-the-day pic on the way out the door, and instead snuck some selfies at a transit station.

Took an adventure to West Seattle to check out a chamber music concert at a neighborhood performing arts center - a cool, tiny building that is over 100 years old. It used to be a dance hall and still has a functioning Wurlitzer pipe organ installed.

The concert was great, and I’d like to go to other events in this quirky, charming venue.

Sparkly (and lots of @copperunion layering) for a concert.

Early fall sunsets in Seattle can stretch into a slow golden evening. Looking out from Pike Place Market gave us a breathtaking view at the right time. There used to be a highway, the viaduct, in this exact spot obscuring the view from where I’m standing in the latter photos; hard to believe it now. 🌇

Can we all just get back to a world where we value the goods made by people around us? Where we pay the extra money for a jacket that will last far into the future and the $ enables a local maker to eat food and pay rent? Our priorities as a society have gotten so mixed up!

Free concert tickets and a good friend's company? Say no more.

I didn't have to talk much and got to hear the beautiful voice of Le Ren.

I've been waiting for the right occasion to wear this stunning silk sweatshirt from local fashion powerhouse @connallygoods via @shop.fat.sisters and a chill concert at the Wise Hall was the perfect opportunity.

Also! This makeup was a joy to put on and thanks to @cheekbonebeauty and their setting powder, it stayed exactly where it was supposed to.

Sometimes the best counter for sadness is to go outside, listen to some music and sit next to a good friend.

Lucky I got to do all three tonight.
