Had the pleasure to meet and enjoy this talented Iranian-Canadian documentary filmmaker @farnazjurabchian . Her latest documentary feature Silent House. Shot over a period of 6 years. She tells the story of her family and their century old house in Tehran in which they all live. I heard a line in a movie once, “when you come to the fork in the road, take it!” I had a chance to do just that and created a piece of live theatre in a couples backyard for a ONE night only performance of Daniel MacIvor’s one man play, HERE LIES HENRY! It is now a milestone in my list of wonderful daring, adventures that rarely comes along in my profession. I was approached to try and make happen for a loving partner, Laura, who in a 10 year marriage wanted to do something special to celebrate her union. She wanted to surprise her husband, Ian, with a performance of a show they saw 10 years ago at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, in Toronto. It was Daniel MacIvor in his play, playing Henry. Of course they “loved it!” Rising to the occasion Christopher Sawchyn dared to prepare the play in 2 weeks (barely half the amount of time one would rehearse for a public production!) but mountains are there to climb. With Laura and Ian seated at sunset and a few neighbours, respectfully social distant in their yards, it was without a doubt a very special evening as Mr. Sawchyn gave a performance beyond what time he had to be ready- and treated us to a great night of Canadian theatre- great job Chris!! I’d like to thank Daniel MacIvor for allowing me to stage this backyard adventure, big love to you Daniel- always been on of my favourite human beings thank you so much. Thank you Daniel Brooks for crafting such a beautiful tale! Laura and Ian, Happy 10th, May you celebrate many, many more. COVID-19 may have distanced humans socially but the power of the arts and on this evening the art of theatre and the magic of the spoken word and an empty space brought people together in an unexpected and beautiful way, so glad to have been a part of it. I hope that I may get other opportunities in my creative future to do what we as artists created this night.
