TONIGHT at 7:30PM SPECTRUM PRESENTS the music of MICHAEL HERSCH continues... at MISE-EN PLACE <harlem>

String Noise will perform "a tearing loose from matter" for two violins (2022)

"a tearing loose from matter" is a brief, single-movement work, written over two days in late 2022. I had been thinking about situations calling upon elusive ideas of compassion in difficult circumstances, issues that poet Shane McCrae often traverses in his writing. In creating the libretto for a new opera based upon McCrae's poetry, I found myself thinking about a particular few lines, lines which I never set in the opera but that lingered nonetheless:

"... he sare the tops of the other angels' heads before he sare their bodies
Before he sare their hands...
Shaking like the hands of humans when humans are pleading"

This in turn reminded me of a line from the end of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, a book I hadn't thought about in well over 40 years:

"The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied..."

In this piece of music, the violinists are called upon to vocalize throughout. Usually, they are singing varying vowel and consonant sounds. The vocalized text is from poet Jan Zwicky's book, Songs for Relinquishing the Earth:

... where the heart lay ... nothing... sun tumbles down"

The title of the work is a fragment from the poem The Memory of the Eye by loan Flora - translated into English from the Romanian by Adam J. Sorkin and Elena Barta.

- Michael Hersch

NEXT SATURDAY, September 12 at @graphic.content.festival Conrad, Steve and Alex will play Morton Feldman’s landmark 1980 composition TRIO, for violin, cello, and piano.

Comment if you know what video is playing in the middle of this trio of trios.

More about Feldman’s TRIO:

Musical Structure
Single Movement: The piece plays continuously without breaks, lasting between 85 and 105 minutes depending on the performance.

Anti-Narrative: Feldman rejected traditional musical storytelling that begins, develops, and ends.

Static Variation: The music repeats small blocks of sound and subtle variations rather than using a driving minimalist pulse.

Dynamic Range: Unlike his ultra-quiet meditative works, the Trio features wide registers, dramatic dialogues, and shifting sound colors.

It’s the opening weekend of a 17-event festival celebrating the centennary of Earle Brown and Morton Feldman, curated by the indomitable @nevets.gnol

Festival Passes for the 10 concerts at St. Michael’s
Church (225 W.99th St) available now!

Summer photo dump. I am one of the luckiest ladies in all the land. I am surrounded by amazing, and amazingly talented people that will adventure through life with me. This summer I got to hang with friends, blow dry scores, go to the beach, get caught in the rain, dress the same as Conrad, go to the ER (not everything can be perfect), attend 6 broadway musicals and a Hilary Duff concert, pet dogs, eat Korean food, do some cool work stuff, and spend a week with the diva herself: Patsy. Now who’s ready for Spooky season?!

What a great night at THE STONE! Massive CONGRATS to Matthew Welch and FLUX Quartet! Two gorgeous string quartets to massage the brain. ❤️‍🩹 Wonderful to be with so many friends and fellow musicians as well!

Will be back tonight to hear Isabelle O'Connell play Matthew's 12 Etudes for Solo Piano -- thought he would say inspired by Glass. But, DEBUSSY!!! ✨
