RANT INCOMING… 👀

We need to have an honest conversation about timber retaining walls — and it might be uncomfortable for some.

Stop selling them as a “solution.”

Timber structures do not provide long-term security for clients. At best, they are a short-term fix dressed up as a cost-saving measure. In reality, they introduce a ticking clock into every project.

Give it 5–10 years:
• The timber starts to warp
• Moisture ingress accelerates decay
• Structural integrity becomes questionable
• Maintenance costs begin to creep in
• Replacement becomes inevitable

And here’s the real issue — the client pays twice. 🤯

Once for the initial installation.
Then again for removal, disposal, and replacement — often at a significantly higher cost due to access constraints, inflation, and disruption.

As engineers and contractors, we have a responsibility to design and recommend solutions that last — not ones that simply “get the job done for now.”

There are modern alternatives available that offer:
• Long design life
• Structural reliability
• Reduced maintenance
• Better whole-life cost

So why are we still defaulting to timber? ❌

If we continue to push short-term solutions, we are not delivering value — we are passing future problems onto our clients.

It’s time to shift the mindset:
Build it once. Build it right. Build it to last. 🧠
