MetalSucks is currently hosting a stream of Pariahs, the new EP from Chicago-based death/extreme metal act CONTRITION.

Formed following the demise of former act Doomsday, CONTRITION recorded their debut LP Broken Mortal Coil during the COVID-19 lockdowns, releasing the album in October of 2011. The band sees vocalist Jerome Marshall (Yakuza, Cobalt-live), guitarist/synth player Jeff Wilson (Chrome Waves, Deeper Graves, ex-Nachtmystium), bassist Jon Woodring (Bones, ex-Usurper), and drummer Garry Naples (Trouble, Novembers Doom, Wolvhammer) creating a monstrous onslaught auditory hostility where ‘90s death metal takes on the streetwise demeanor of a back-alley stabbing.

With three damaging new songs, Pariahs was recorded by Chris Lee Smith and CONTRITION, mixed and mastered by Jeff Wilson, completed with cover art by Andre Trindade, and features a guest solo on “Trauma Queen” by Sammy Duet (Goatwhore).

MetalSucks deems Pariahs, “no bullshit, unadulterated death metal,” further commenting, “the songs all feel taut with purpose. There’s no fat to be trimmed from any of these offerings because it’s already been pared down to the bone. It really feels like a love letter to ‘90s death metal in the most honest way possible.”

I’ll be honest, I don’t generally buy a lot of straight death metal or grindcore, but mix those with black metal and some sludge…Gimme all of that. So the first time I checked out @contritionchicago after seeing a post about their upcoming release, I was more than into their sound and immediately put my order in. Fast forward about a month and here I am, CD in my hands and as obsessed as I could possibly be.
As mentioned above, Contrition blends multiple genres of metal into one cohesive, successful, powerful, massively addicting sound. There’s everything you expect from death metal, with the low tones, speed, and extreme blast beats of grindcore, the scuzzy, dirty riffs of sludge, and the snarling, biting harsh vocals of black metal–the perfect recipe for an engaging and memorable record.
Just in the first track, ‘Diluted,’ you get a taste of every aspect of Contrition’s sound–it starts slow, ominous, like dragging yourself through the mire, then switches to intense, blaring drums, fast yet still sludgy riffs, and meedly solos, followed by a return to a slower, sludgy tempo, everything tied together with scathing, low, wet harsh vocals. All of this is what you can look forward to through ‘Broken Mortal Coil’’s 30 minute run time. A few of exceptionally stand out moments include the infectious percussion and cadence of ‘Nihilistic Right,’ easily one of my favorite tracks. The addition of higher harsh vocals in ‘For Misery’ provide fantastic contrast, especially when layered with the lower, sinister growls. I love the pacing change of ‘Added Subtraction,’ focusing more on those slower, lower, drawn out guitar parts. And what was the most delightful surprise for me, a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Tourette’s.’ This, ladies and gentleman, is how you do a Nirvana cover–you take it and make it your own. And man does Contrition’s style ever fit that chaotic, manic, dark side of Nirvana that I absolutely adore. Just go give it a listen and tell me it’s not one of the best Nirvana covers you’ve ever heard.
I’m so glad to have this in the collection, it’s a welcome divergence from my norm, and I certainly am looking forward to where these guys go from here.
