Slightly delayed in my post but @ironmantri 70.3 Oregon was a success. Not only was it in beautiful and friendly Salem, it was a @tribiketransport team race which are always the most fun. I have the best, nicest, funniest, most eccentric teammates and I love spending time with each and everyone one of them.

The swim was a super fast river swim (legend has it a Doritos bag floated the 1.2 miles in 27 minutes), which doesn’t play to my strengths and I somehow found it quite choppy, but also fun.

The bike was a nice out and back with some great rollers in there, which DOES play to my strengths so I enjoyed it a lot.

The run was stunning, with all but about 2 miles of it winding through big, shady trees in a park. I’m working on finding my run again, and am doing so little by little, but, man, that was perhaps my favorite run course.

Got 2nd in age, 6th overall, and secured a 70.3 World Championship a lot for Taupo, New Zealand next year!

Thanks to Marc, Tim and the whole Tribike gang for dinner, photo shoots, camaraderie and for taking care of / putting up with @teamtribike all weekend. Thanks to my coach @toddbuckone for encouraging me and keeping me patient in my return to glory. Shoutout to @homebikeshop for tuning up the bike nicely for the race. Love this sport, love my people, and really love this life!

#medalmonday @ironmantri 70.3 Indian Wells is in the books! The short version; everything miraculously came together with a 7th place M50-54 finish, and snagged a slot to 2022 Worlds 70.3 in St. George! So blessed and grateful to have the chance to catch up and race with old & new friends!

The longer version: to be honest, I wasn’t excited leading up to this race. Motivation was waning, work stress was increasing, I still had that weird knee thing that would come & go, and daylight savings put a damper on training. But I wanted to race alongside my brother @stealthliou, who signed up for Indian Wells after his freak accident at St. George Worlds 70.3 this past September. Only hours before the start of the race did I got those old excited vibes back!!

Swim: I dreaded the cold swim, but it turned out to be quite a pleasant 60.1 deg (with a thermal fleece cap 🤣). Lake Cahuilla is a beautiful venue, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Got out of the water in 33:04, a few minutes faster than 2 years ago.

Bike: Although a flat and fast course, I forgot about potential headwinds, which appeared during the second half of the bike. Also, I went over a pothole early on and my handlebars moved 😮! I guess I didn’t tighten them down enough. 🤦🏻 They weren’t so bad that I had to stop, but I spent a fair amount of time worrying and holding them in a way that they wouldn’t slip further. Ended up with a 2:40:04; pretty standard for me 🙄 (2min slower than 2019).

Run: felt good off the bike! Yay! My right knee cooperated, thanks to expert PT advice from @conyoungnz. Managed my form, fuel, and pace and ended with a 1:40:18 (6 min faster than 2019).

Total time: 4:59:44. It’s officially off season. Let’s eat!! 🤣🍩🍪🥞

2019 Half Ironman North American Championships.

I just had the PERFECT race. Best swim I could have had. Best bike I could have had. And good lord, did I kick the crap out of the run.
.
Usually, when I reflect back on races, I always think, “Well, I could have done better. I could have swam more smoothly, I could have biked a little better, I could have run a little faster.” There is none of that here. There is absolutely nothing that I could have done to improve my overall time. This has never happened to me before. It’s a surreal feeling to be this content with a race.
.
4:38:30, a PR at this event, which I’ve done 5 times. Best swim time, best bike time, best run time. Finished 21st out of 234 in my age group, and 116th out of 2300 overall. This course is wicked hilly, which is not well suited for a triathlete that weighs 187 pounds. Against a stacked field, I am very happy with my placing.
.
Most importantly, I qualified for the 2019 Half Ironman World Championships, which will be held in Nice, France!! Honestly, it’s an amazing feeling to know that I’ll get to travel to an amazing destination because of something that I accomplished athletically. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that triathlon would afford me the opportunity to compete on a world stage.
.
Congrats to my TriBike Transport team on great races and badass finishing times. 3 of us qualified for worlds, and I’m happy that I’ll get to race alongside of my teammates.
