Investing in our youth is important to me. And part of that investment is simply showing up, especially when our young people reach milestones like completing a class, graduating from a program, or turning their ideas into action.

I was honored to be invited to speak at the graduation of the Cool OC Youth Climate Leadership Program, an Irvine-founded nonprofit program that provides middle and high school students with hands-on education in energy, conservation, environmental stewardship, technology, leadership, and civic engagement.

With the program founded here in Irvine and many of the participants coming from our own local schools, it was especially meaningful to see how engaged both the students and their parents were.

Students completed hours of interactive training, additional independent work, and a final project where they were challenged not just to learn about issues, but to develop solutions and understand how civic engagement can turn ideas into action.

I was also proud to be there wearing two hats, as Vice Mayor of Irvine and Vice Chairman of the Orange County Power Authority, which supported the organization with funding through our Bright Futures Grant. It’s rewarding to see those resources at work directly supporting young people in our community.

Conserving water, reducing unnecessary waste, using energy efficiently, and protecting our natural resources are real issues that affect all of us. Conservation is simply responsible stewardship. At the same time, America should continue to lead the world in energy, innovation, and technology. We should be developing new sources of energy, strengthening reliability and affordability, encouraging American innovation, and preparing the next generation to develop solutions we haven’t even imagined yet.

Congratulations to every graduate of the Cool OC Youth Climate Leadership Program. Keep learning, keep asking questions, stay engaged, and never believe you are too young to make a difference.

Over the last couple years @cityofcostamesa staff have worked with consultants, community partners, and the public to analyze climate data and risks and develop a draft Climate Action and Adaptation plan. While we have already been doing a lot of great work for mitigation and resilience, the plan provides locks in a list of specific actions with progress tracking to support meeting our emissions reduction goals and appropriately prepare for growing hazards (heat, flood, wildfires).

We’re celebrating our 2026 Youth Climate Leadership program graduates today! They attended many hours of class and a capstone project to complete the program.🙌👏

Some of the students presented their final projects and we’re inspired by their creativity and dedication! We can’t wait to see the impact they make on their households, schools and communities!

Thank you to @vicemayormai for stopping by to congratulate the students and sharing his involvement in sustainability initiatives. @drjeffkim_irvineschoolboard send a video sharing his journey to community work and urged students to continue to make their impact.

We appreciate the support of @ocpowerauthority and the City of Irvine for supporting this program!
