The Future is Now: Michigan Wrestling’s 2026–2027 Outlook

Michigan isn’t building anymore—they’ve arrived.

A team that finished 7th in the nation with just six qualifiers—and placed five on the podium isn’t just dangerous… it’s a sleeping giant. Now they’re adding firepower.

The core is already proven. Cam Catrabone, Brock Mantanona, and Beau “Easy Money” Mantanona aren’t just NCAA qualifiers—they’re legit title contenders heading into next season with real expectations to win.

And now—Sergio Lemely is back.

After going 21–1 in his redshirt season, Lemely enters next season as a top-5 threat at 149. With him in the lineup, Michigan realistically has four national title contenders.

Then comes the next wave.

True freshman Gauge Botero started this season and showed serious promise in the toughest weight class. Eren Sement and Cooper Hilton also flashed major potential and will be hard to keep out of the lineup. The future of “Heavyweight U” may soon rest on Niko Sahakian’s shoulders.

Then there’s the Class of 2026.

I’ve said it privately to the program—this might be Coach Bormet’s best recruiting class yet. It features two #1 ranked recruits, another #2 overall prospect, and six top-40 wrestlers nationally. Across eight commits, the group brings in a combined 20 state titles. My bold early prediction: at least two true freshmen crack the starting lineup.

And don’t forget the portal—Michigan will add 1–2 instant-impact wrestlers, like they always do.

This isn’t a team hoping for top 10 anymore.

This is a trophy team.

If Michigan gets 8–10 qualifiers to NCAAs, a top-4 finish is very real. They’ve already proven they can maximize points—now it’s about numbers.

If they wrestle next March like they did this year…

Expect Michigan in the mix on Saturday night—with hardware on the line. #wrestling #universityofmichigan #collegewrestling

Instant Reaction: Tonight in Ann Arbor Wolverines dominated Northwestern by a score of 38-4. This duel was highlighted by a few big pins and freshmen sensations. Here’s a few key takeaways from the duel.

Tonight we honored this senior class. So my MVP of the duel goes to senior team captain Dylan Ragusin. With an 11-3 major, he dominated his an opponent who on paper, wasn’t ranked far behind him. However Dylan is clearly pushing towards peaking towards March, where he will again be a force to be reckoned. It’s truly been a pleasure to watch him during his time here in Ann Arbor.

While today’s theme was honoring Seniors, our youth shined exceptionally bright tonight as well. True freshman Cooper Hilton earned his first of many wins in Crisler center. With an 11-5 win he looked impressive. Our redshirt freshmen dominated however. Cam Catrabone had another major, in what just feels like business as usual at this point. Justin Gates then earned a tough 6-0 win. At 184 Brock took one of the wildest scrambles I’ve seen in his career and turned it into an electric pin. Then to not be outdone, Hayden Walters followed that up with his first career pin as well.

I just mentioned all this youth, yet our veteran stars dominated as well. Beau had a 12-3 major that didn’t even feel that close. Fellow seniors Taye Ghadiali and Diego Sotelo closed the duel out with a 21-5 Tech and 2-0 win respectively. The point is the Wolverines calmly dominated tonight. Headed into February this team looks very focused and formidable on the bigger goals at hand.

Sunday our Wolverines travel down south to face that team in Red. Next Friday we welcome Penn St to Ann Arbor. February 13th, we face Iowa. This stretch I believe will put the world on notice of the talent in Ann Arbor. These next few weeks I expect the Wolverines to show the world exactly what we are capable of. #michiganwrestling #universityofmichigan #bigtenwrestling #collegewrestling #bigten
