NEW EPISODE OF THIS IS THE SCENE NOW ON YOUTUBE
Primal Scream, Oasis, The Verve, The Stone Roses... They're names that have been constant
sources of inspiration for the bands we've spoken to throughout this series. Pleasure Pill are no
different — so you'd be forgiven for thinking they were from Britain.
But they’re not. They're from San Diego, California.
This is The Scene has officially gone international. In this episode, we speak to indie band
Pleasure Pill, who have already released one album and one EP, and are proving that
influence doesn't have to come at the expense of originality.
At a time when many bands wear their influences on their sleeve without adding much of
themselves, Pleasure Pill are far from imitators. They've listened to the B-sides, they've studied
the anthologies, and they've seen the shows. They understand the history and nuance behind
the music they love, combining those influences with the punk rock roots they grew up around to
create something that feels both unmistakably British in spirit and entirely their own.
In this episode, we talk to Pleasure Pill about how those sounds made the long journey across
the Atlantic and into their bedrooms, and why British guitar music continues to resonate with a
new generation of musicians in America. They discuss balancing those influences with their own
identity, what it's like building an audience in the US with a sound so deeply rooted in another
country's music history, and how the San Diego scene differs from the local scenes we've
explored throughout this series. We also hear their perspective on touring across the vast
American landscape and pick up a few tour hacks they've learned along the way.
We won't compare them to The Beatles (yet), but just as the fab four brought American
blues rock back to America, the question is: can Pleasure Pill bring British indie guitar back to Britain ?
