POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What does hands-on, experiential learning look like? At the Pacific Impact Media Fellowship, students are moving from ideas to action through camera workshops, production planning, and interview and scripting techniques.

Across the first weekend, teams identified social issues they care about, defined their target audiences and calls to action, conducted research, and developed strategies for engaging viewers. They explored camera operation, audio recording, framing, background composition, camera movement, and shooting with the edit in mind. Through interviewing and scripting workshops, students practiced how to ask meaningful questions and shape stories that connect with audiences.

With guidance from industry mentors, students are developing production plans, gathering assets, and translating their ideas into actionable media projects designed to inspire social change.

This is learning by doing: building technical skills, experimenting with creative approaches, collaborating across disciplines, and using storytelling to make a difference in our communities.

One weekend down, one to go! 🎬

Now in its 7th year, the @universityofthepacific Pacific Impact Media Fellowship brings students together to explore how storytelling can inspire social change and create meaningful community impact.

Our first weekend brought together students from across Pacific @copacific @pacificsoecs @uopacificshs. Students are learning from Pacific alumni @pacificalumni Chris Schueler, an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker with 20 Emmy Awards, and Dean Butler, actor (Little House on the Prairie) and accomplished producer.

We’re also thrilled to welcome back recent Media Arts & Production graduates Jose Flores-Jimenez, Moises Guzman Naranjo, Jess Hess, and Asher Bloom. From independent filmmaking and award-winning creative production to professional film producing and interdisciplinary storytelling, they’re bringing their talents and real-world experience back to Pacific. Their journeys reflect the possibilities that emerge when creative vision, collaboration, and a commitment to storytelling come together.

One weekend down, one to go! We can’t wait to see the stories these teams bring to life and the impact they can make.

Before they were an Emmy Award-winning documentarian and a familiar face from Little House on the Prairie, Chris Schueler and Dean Butler were first-year students at Pacific.

They met here, became life-long friends, and have been creative collaborators for over 50 years! As alumni and industry experts, Chris and Dean have given generously of their time and talent to our students and faculty.

To build on last year’s success, Chris and Dean return to Pacific this month to work with Professors Courtney Lehmann, Susan Mannon, and Cosana Eram in their CORE classes, bringing first-year students into the world of storytelling, media, and problem solving.

Students will learn by doing—developing ideas, interviewing, collaborating, filming, and editing.

Chris and Dean’s visit also connects to the Pacific Impact Media Fellowship, mentoring students from across the university, over two intensive weekends, to create short films focused on social change.
