1. Spent more of my free time practicing haircuts. Cutting anyone and everyone’s hair. It took me 3 years to KIND OF know what I was doing, 6 years to feel confident doing a round layered haircut, and at least 8-10 years to feel confident with any cut that walked in the door. Do I still have room for improvement? Absolutely. That is the beauty of our industry!

2. Assisted for LONGER. I assisted for about 10 months. Fresh out of school I was eager and excited. Yes I learned a lot during those 10 months, but I could have learned more. The salon I started at was great, but I could have looked for an assisting opportunity that was more 1:1. Working with the assistants I have now, they get to see so much in my 10 hour workdays. Yes things are repetitive during those days, but once you have your own clientele you’ll realize that is all doing hair is. Repeating the same services and cuts over and over and they make you a lot of $$$.

3. Focused less on making friends in the salon. This sounds weird and harsh but I promise you everyone cares mostly about themselves and their own success, as they should. Yes I am friendly and I invest time where it’s needed, but building wealth and building a clientele takes work and dedication. If you are distracted, you simply cannot put your all into your craft. I promise you coming the salon hungover is fine, but fine doesn’t reflect well in your services.

4. Got over my weird fear of caring what everyone thought about me online sooner. I read something that said, “people don’t even remember what you post, so post it again.” And that stands 1000% true. There are days where I don’t even remember the content I consumed hours earlier. Lol that shows you how much our brains go through in a day. Post your journey. Post your story. I promise people want to know!

5. INVEST. INVEST. INVEST. To make money in any industry, you have to invest. In your edu, in your tools, in your commute to work at the top salon in your area, in your time marketing yourself, in your health to keep you standing for 10-12 hrs a day. It’s all worth it in the end! :)

Ash is never my first choice… but I think there is a way to have a little warmth and a little ash without it turning muddy. Working with nighttime lighting so you can’t really see the full tone here but love the result.

What is your opinion on ash? Are we anti ash still?!

Going away from years and years of blonde doesn’t have to be a major change where you wake up the next day to a full crash out of regret.
