I have just received this incredibly beautiful portrait of our dearest Manny, created by costacreationsinc on Etsy, and I write now with much gratitude. This is such a thoughtful and caring gesture, and I am beyond appreciative.
We rejoice in the specialness of this symbol with which Manny’s memory is being honored. The relationships with this supportive community are so positive and affirming, and this means so much when one faces a loss, such as we have with Manny.
As always we find strength in the support of the Instagram Cat Community, and we hope that memories of Manny (Manhattan) will be joyful, as Manny was a happy boy who loved his cat wheel and singing the Caturday song to welcome Caturday each week.
(Additionally memorial funds were received and we chose to donate them to a local rescue organization, carolinapaws.com in Manny’s name, just as Manny would have wanted it.)
We thank you, dear friends, for these gifts, and for loving and caring about Manny.

In a strange but welcome miracle, Chumley just celebrated his first anniversary of receiving his terminal diagnosis and 1 week to live prognosis. Hoping that his diagnosis was mistaken, I took him to our regular vet and she confirmed it--Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. But, she says, "he's a tough old guy and he wants to fight. Give him whatever he wants!" That includes Churus. We think Chumley believes Churus make life worth living. We're okay with that. So he's eating and drinking fine, and was even playing with the kittens the other day. We are thankful (& watchful) for every moment we get with "The Big Red One." Big thanks to @rlwitte who is so meticulous about Chumley's care and Dr. Cohen for keeping him goin'.. #mainecoon #mainecoonsofinstagram #churu #nordhoffvet

I am deeply touched by the love I’ve been shown by this amazing cat Instagram community. I was moved to tears when I opened this portrait drawn by @haliegirl. It was commissioned by several lovely friends who I have tagged in this post ❤️ The outpouring of love I’ve received about Sammy’s passing is astonishing and I am grateful for everyone who has commented and reached out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️🌈

Issue 41 of @americanwhiskeymag is headed to news stands now! In this issue I discuss the agricultural commonalities between cigars and whiskey, learn about @bluegrassbitters, dive into sweet mash with @wildernesstraildistillery, @kentuckypeerless, @hardtruthspirits, and @mount_vernon, and deconstruct (see what I did there?) the new @kraxbarrelstorage systems developed by @thekoettergroup. Whiskey and cigar pairings include @cohibacigars and @newriff, @goodtroublebourbon and @tatuajecigars, @marydowlingwhiskey and @drewestatecigar, and @rabbithole and @alecbradleycigar. Featured cigar shops are @elvecinomiami and @telfordspipeandcigar.

After last week's dismal post, I wanted to share some happier updates. In the following pictures you can see the "old guard," I.e., Chumley (big orange & white Maine Coon) and Smedley (big white & orange Maine Coon). The rest are deliveries to our backyard by the Kitten Distribution System who later moved indoors. See previous post for details.

The first rescue was Cotswold, who's a beautiful solid orange with a fluffy, incredibly soft medium-hair coat. I've never really seen anything like him. Then there are Cotswold's siblings, the 3 little guys born to the same catmom 4 months later: Cheddar Jack (orange tabby with white; very short coat), Galloway (b/w, very soft & fluffy, probably most closely related to Cotswold), and Devon (ticked Torby, also very short coat), aka Miss Adventure Kitty aka Misadventure Kitty. They all get along really well, and are very loving & friendly although Cotswold is a bit shy (he's the one sticking out from under the end table). So suddenly we've got a preponderance of orange cats. We'd never had any before Chumley but my brother's orange tabby persuaded me to try. Needless to say, there's mad stampeding and worrisome noises at all hours now. Lots of skidding and those cartoon-style starts where the feet start running before the body gets going. Very fun, and distracts us from all the tragedies of late November 2025 - 1st week in January 2026. Any diversion from that is a welcome relief!

So that's the current batch of the Witte Kitties!

I have refrained from posting this before now, because we had a lot of doom and gloom packed into the end of 2025 and the start of 2026. You might recall that @rlwitte1 had tamed a stray cat who was living in our backyard. We named her Dahlia. She surprised us by bringing her two kittens over to meet us. Since one was orange and white, we named him Colby Jack, and we named his solid orange brother Cotswold. So now we had Momcat and the cheeseheads. Momcat surprised us again when she had another litter while she was still nursing the Cheeseheads and still had her girlish figure. She had 6 tiny kittens and was the most assiduous mother. She never left them alone--she always had Cotswold and Colby Jack watching over them.

Then the losses began. First was Momcat. We were late to give her breakfast so she went out hunting for it. She never came back. We think a hawk or coyote got her. So now we had to bottle feed 6 two-week old babies. The week before Thanksgiving, Heffalump suddenly wasn't feeling well. At the ER they told us he'd collected fluid around his heart and it was refilling too fast to repair. Out of the blue, we were suddenly putting him to sleep. He was 14. Meanwhile, Spotley had developed a sore on his forehead that wouldn't heal. We thought it was a scratch that abscessed. But it wasn't. It was cancer breaking through the skin on his forehead. It was eating through the bone, headed for his brain. So we unexpectedly had to put him to sleep on January 2nd. He was 13 and had never been ill. The following week, Colby Jack began feeling poorly. The vet diagnosed him with an advanced case of panleukopenia. Symptoms had only been visible the day before. So there we were again, saying goodbye, this time,e to a kitten that was 8 months old. By some miracle, his inseparable brother Cotswold never got it.

So between August and January, we lost 4 cats. Ironically, Chumley--who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a week to live last July 2025--is still with us in April 2026. So the one we anticipated losing is still alive; and the other four, who'd shown no signs of illness, were suddenly and totally unexpectedly gone. We were gutted.
