A portal is opening in Washington D.C. REFLECT an immersive archive will be on view October 28, 2026 – February 19, 2027, the exhibition celebrates the Mirror Shield Project and brings the work’s ethos of engagement into the Civic Arts Lab, developed as part of the For Freedoms Residency @forfreedoms in partnership with the National Gallery of Art @ngadc and the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design @corcoran_gw. Presented as Counting Coup: We Are The People, Cannupa Hanska Luger’s residency project brings together regional organizers, artists, students, and visitors to exchange tactics, prompts, and strategies for art as civic action. REFLECT traces the evolving life of Luger’s Mirror Shield Project, an open-source artwork initiated in 2016 in response to the Dakota Access Pipeline and in solidarity with the Indigenous-led resistance at Standing Rock. As the pipeline threatened the waters of his ancestral homelands, Luger circulated a video demonstrating how to make mirrored shields from inexpensive materials. The tutorial functioned as a call to collective action, an invitation for the nation to stand in solidarity with the Water Protectors. The exhibition traces the mirror shields across a decade of circulation, adaptation, and reactivation as sculptural forms, tools of protection, educational resources, performance instruments, and catalysts for collective action. Photographs, videos, clothing, ephemera, and community-generated documentation reveal an artwork shaped by the many people who have made, carried, adapted, and activated it. Rather than presenting the Mirror Shield as a fixed object, the exhibition explores the ways its form and meaning have accumulated through use, movement, and collective authorship. REFLECT functions as both a living retrospective of the Mirror Shield Project and a working toolshed, inviting visitors, artists, students, and community groups to make new shields and activate old ones. The exhibition brings the project’s history into the present, treating the archive as a resource to be carried forward, interpreted, and put into practice. 📸 installation process image for REFLECT 2016/2026

Eve Rozier, one of the GW students behind Cracks & Reforms, talks through the two works that open and close the exhibition, and the thinking that put them there. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception. It was wonderful to see students, alumni, and faculty from across the Corcoran’s programs and disciplines, alongside longtime friends of the Brady Gallery. Seeing the galleries full of people, conversation, — and this time, even a drum performance, — is what makes years of research and months of preparation visible. In her remarks, Corcoran Director Laura Schiavo quoted MFA Professor Michele Carlson on the work of art that cannot be stopped, and a reminder of why we’re here: to support the scholarship and creative expression of everyone in the Corcoran community. Join us for a student-led tour on Friday, October 9, 1–2 p.m., and be part of the conversation. ❗️The gallery will be closed for the Fall Break on Saturday, October 10. Mark your calendars for the Cracks & Reforms symposium next Thursday, October 15. #gwu #gwuarts #bradygallery #corcoranarthistory #corcoranschoolofart

Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC Founded in 1869 by Washington banker and philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran, the historic Corcoran Gallery of Art was one of the first private art museums in the United States. Dedicated with the mission of "encouraging American genius," the institution was originally housed in a building near the White House (now known as the Renwick Gallery) before quickly outgrowing its space. To accommodate its expanding collection and the newly established Corcoran School of Art, the gallery commissioned a grand new home on 17th Street. Opened in 1897, the magnificent Beaux-Arts building, designed by architect Ernest Flagg and later expanded with the Clark Wing in 1928, became an architectural landmark in the nation's capital. Inside, the museum housed a world-class permanent collection focusing heavily on historic and contemporary American painting, sculpture, and European masterpieces, while its integrated school served as a vital incubator for generations of artists. For nearly 150 years, it stood as a cornerstone of Washington's cultural community, celebrated for both its dynamic exhibitions and its commitment to local and national artistic development. Despite its rich legacy, the institution faced severe financial and structural challenges entering the 21st century. To preserve its historic mission and secure the future of its assets, a landmark legal restructuring occurred in 2014. Under this agreement, the historic Flagg Building and the art school were transitioned to George Washington University, while the vast majority of its esteemed art collection was transferred to the National Gallery of Art. Today, the building continues its legacy of creative education and exhibition as the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, ensuring that William Corcoran’s foundational vision endures. Despite having lived in Washington for 15 years, I finally visited for the first time this past Friday! It was declared a #nationalhistoriclandmark in 1992. #washingtondc #art #corcoran #GW

So much energy at the Thurston New Student Luncheon yesterday as we welcomed incoming @gwuniversity Revolutionaries! Thanks to the New Student Orientation team, and can’t wait to see the Class of 2030 in action this fall. #RaiseHigh #GW2030 💛💙 The George Washington University President Ellen M. Granberg poses with a smiling student inside Thurston Residence Hall during a new student luncheon. The student, on the left, flashes a peace sign at the camera. In the background, a blackboard and a sign reading "KNOW YOUR FOOD" are visible.
