Let’s talk rib flare! 👀

Rib flare is when the lower ribs sit or appear to pop forward. While this can be completely normal for some people, others can experience discomfort, core and pelvic floor dysfunction or impacts on breathing mechanics.

Here is part 1 of exercises to help address rib flare👇

✨ 360° breathing: as you inhale focus on expanding your ribs in all directions — front, sides, and back. A resistance band around the lower rib cage can give feedback into what areas the expansion may be limited.

✨ Back rib breathing: In a supported child’s pose gently breathe into the back of your rib cage. Option to place a pillow to restrict the front ribs and prioritize the back ribs expansion.

✨ Side rib breathing: In a side lying position place a pillow under the bottom rib cage to promote expansion of the top ribs.

✨ Thoracic mobility: Cat/cows and open books (optional banded) help to improve thoracic mobility which is linked to ribcage positioning.

✨ Scapular push-ups: In a four point position, bring shoulder blades together, then press apart to strengthen serratus anterior, improve scapular control and ability to keep the rib cage stacked on top of pelvis during upper body movements.

Remember: there’s no single exercise that fixes rib flare! The best approach depends on your individual anatomy, breathing patterns, and movement habits.

Watch out for Part 2!!

No two projects ask the same thing of us, and that’s part of what keeps the work interesting.

HID’s portfolio spans private homes and apartments, offices, and boutique commercial spaces, including projects like Pilates studios. The scale, function, and aesthetic may change, but the approach remains thoughtful and tailored to the people who will ultimately use the space.

Our involvement can range from FF&E, including furnishings, lighting, art, and accessories, to full interior design, where we consider the space as a whole from the earliest stages.

Working across different project types keeps us curious, challenges us creatively, and allows us to bring ideas and experience from one environment into another.

Different spaces. Different needs. Never the same solution twice.
