There’s nothing I love more than teaching!
Had a great time with the coaches up at @crossfitnorthgate this afternoon. Talked about hip and shoulder health, and simple tips they can do to help their client base out.
Hoping to keep helping coaches and trainers around Marin and Sonoma better impact the lives of those they work with!

Do you have difficulty getting depth in your squat?

Join the club.
Squatting is so in right now. And if you can’t squat deep, what’s your deal?
Many people will tell you that you have tight calves, or stiff ankles. They may be correct, but I often find that the bigger limitation for people gaining depth in their squat is seen in the hip joint.

In fact, the number one thing I hear people ask for videos on is hip mobility exercises or drills.
But how do you know you don’t have enough hip mobility in the first place?

Easy. Today I’m sharing a simple test that you can perform at home that will allow you to assess your own hip mobility.

Watch the video above, try squatting a few times, and see how it feels. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be rolling out 3 exercises that you can use to drastically improve your hip motion, and subsequently improve your squat depth.

All in the name of the booty.

Toe Touch Challenge Week 3!

Are you touching your toes yet? I sure hope so!

You may have noticed that over these past 2 weeks, you’ll have good days and bad days. But among those, you may notice that your bad days now are even better than your good days 2 weeks ago.

Consistent practice over time will reinforce this trend, and keep you touching your toes for months and years to come.

Now, for the final progression and last step in the toe touch challenge:

Downward Dog

Most of you are probably familiar with the downward dog, as it is one of the most popular yoga moves out there.
HOWEVER, today I’ll be showing you a different way to perform it. There’s nothing wrong with the original way, but I’ve found this new tweak to make all of the difference.
This simple change can improve your shoulder strength, increase your toe touch, and make you look like you know some yoga.

Pretty cool.

Make sure you start easy with this one, but you should be able to begin with 3 x 4, and work your way up to 3 x 8!

Toe Touch Challenge Week 2!

How’s your progress coming along? Maybe you gained an inch or two in the right direction?

If you’re tired of rocking on your back, I get it. Time to switch it up!

Exercise 2: The All 4 Plank

Damn, I love this exercise. It is an ab BURNER.

It also looks unbelievably simple. Don’t let that fool you, you’re in for some fun times ahead.
As a reminder, the reason we continue to target abdominal muscles is to improve your ability to RELAX those muscles in your lower and mid back.
If you notice that your back starts to bother you after sitting for a while, or when you stand up and start to feel tightness, then this is also a great exercise for you!

Make sure you do this exercise daily, start with 3 rounds of 3 long breaths, and progress to 3 x 6 breaths by this time next week.

Expert tip: Do these as a way to break up your day, especially if you’re sitting at a desk for most of the day.

Toe Touch Challenge Week 1!

Today we’re introducing the first exercise in our 3 week challenge to improve your toe touch. If you’re planning on doing this, let me ask you first: did you take a picture last week?

If not, make sure you do so now. I know it seems stupid and that you’ll be able to tell if you made improvements, but I can assure you having a picture will really be able to quantify the change you made.
Alright, so what are we going after in our first exercise?
Abs. Abs. And more Abs.
Why?

If you read my post from last week, you’ll remember that often times, people are limited in their toe touch by air being trapped in the abdomen, and this making the back muscles tight.
By using the deep abdominal muscles, we aid in loosening up the back muscles, and allow for improved relaxation of the tissues on the back of the body.

Make sure you do this exercise daily, start with 20 rocks, and progress to 3 x 20 by this time next week.

This shouldn’t be very challenging, but you should feel a little looser after!

Expert tip: Breathe through your nose only during this exercise to get the most bang for your buck.

Toe Touch Challenge:

Touching your toes is something that we should all be able to do. Yet so many of us struggle to even get to our ankles.
Does that sound like you? If so, then I have the perfect challenge for you.

We often associate our inability to touch our toes with our "tight" hamstrings. What if I told you that stretching your hamstrings isn't the key to being able to bend down and touch your toes?

If you want to know the actual reason you haven't been able to touch your toes yet, then make sure to check out my latest post!

Alright! I’m back from the honeymoon, and it’s time to get back to it!

I’m picking up with a heavy hitter as well. If there is ONE post that you read of mine, make sure it’s this one.
If you’ve been following anything that I’ve put out over the past few months, you may have asked yourself the following question: Why does this guy always give exercises in sets of breaths? And why does he want me to breathe in such a strange and specific way?

Fair questions.
The answer is that the exercises that I’ve given out over the past few months are very specific and unique. They require more focus than your typical stretch or push-up, because they’re aimed to unlock certain movements that your body hasn’t been able to.
If there’s one thing that limits success in the strategies that I use, it’s just going through the motions when it comes to the breathing. It ties everything together.
In the above video, I explain some of why the breathing is so important to what I do. But please please please don’t stop here. I put out a blog that has so much more helpful information in it on this subject. If you want to know more, make sure to comment “BREATHE” below, and I’ll send it over to you!

Also, starting next week, I’ll be going over a 3 week progression to help you actually be able to touch your toes. If you know someone who has struggled with this, or you have yourself, make sure to tag them in this post!
