⚙️ Tech You Should Know — Chapter 10: COROS DURA 2 SOLAR

What if your bike computer could go for days without charging — and help you understand your training in a completely different way?

Meet the new COROS DURA 2 SOLAR.

At first glance, its biggest statement is endurance. It promises up to 120 hours of GPS battery life on a single charge. Its integrated solar panel can add up to two hours of riding time for every hour spent in direct sunlight.

But the real story goes beyond battery life.

Weighing just 99 grams, the DURA 2 combines a carbon-fibre backplate and an anodised aluminium frame with a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Its MIP display refreshes at up to 38 Hz, delivering a more responsive experience while keeping power consumption low.

You can interact with it through the touchscreen, physical and haptic buttons, or voice commands — useful when your hands should stay on the bars. You can even record voice notes after a ride to describe your effort and how you felt.

Its navigation has also evolved. Detailed maps, turn-by-turn directions, offline route recalculation and climb alerts — even without a preloaded route — make it particularly interesting for riders who like to explore beyond familiar roads.

And then comes the unexpected part.

The DURA 2 SOLAR lets you share your training data with AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude for analysis and training suggestions.

Your ride doesn’t have to end when you stop pedalling. The data you collect can become the starting point for deeper questions about your performance, training and progress.

It’s not just about recording more numbers. It’s about finding new ways to make sense of them.

With solar charging, exceptional battery life, advanced navigation and AI connectivity, COROS is taking a different approach to what a cycling computer can be.

This is COROS DURA 2 SOLAR
And this is a Tech You Should Know.

I have been able to approach most of the trail races that I’ve done with a very precise idea of the splits and how fast I can run each section. I can account for most of the variables affecting my speed during a trail race, to the point where I can predict split times down to the minute. Pace and splits in my case become a lot more similar to road racing, where everything is relatively predictable and very accurate.

Race strategy also has to do with the amount of risk I am willing to accept, because I’m not just trying to finish a race but to win. Often, I try to plan a race strategy that is right near my performance limits and that I know that if I can stick to, very few people will be able to keep up. The strategy is difficult to realize but if I can make it, I know it will create a lot of damage on the competition.

For @festival_des_templiers, I ended up running 8 minutes faster than I predicted. However, until after mid race (La Salvage) I was always 1-2 minutes behind my predicted splits. I finished strong and pushed really hard in the last 20k to take the lead, which felt really good.

For the race, I fine tuned my strategy with the @corosglobal pace strategy and uploaded it to my Apex 4. You can it yourself and let me know what you think!

This year it feels like I am struggling a bit when it comes the time to compete. I have been doing some of the best training I have ever done, yet I am struggling to deliver and putting everything together as I go into a race. It’s happened for Black Canyon, Chianti, Western States to some extent, and now for Templiers.

Two weeks ago, one day after the film screenings in Milan and Como, I fell on the trails and hurt my left glute. Nothing very serious and only a three day break from running but since then I haven’t felt like myself. I got sick near the end of last week and I haven’t recovered since then. Things have been a lot more uncertain and I’ve had to adjust day by day, which always comes with uncertainty and some stress, as opposed to the linearity and predictability we seek in training.

I don’t want to live like a monk but at the same time I am aware that every small deviation from the daily routine exposes myself to some risk, especially as I’m constantly navigating the thin edge of being very close to my limits. I have been questioning my priorities and choices and how I approach some situations that have nothing wrong in themselves, but do not happen in the cosmic void, they happen in the reality of an athlete who is training 20h a week, with a year’s worth of work behind.

@festival_des_templiers happens on Sunday, I am signed up for the Grand Trail as my last trail race of the season. I have been very unsure whether to try or not, because my body feels weak, I haven’t recovered from the sickness and running 80km with +3500m (really fast) isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

I have been trying my best. We tend to take for granted the fact that we can perform up to a certain level just because we have proven to be good enough in the past. These situations highlight the limits of such way of thinking, which is not fundamentally wrong, but doesn’t apply automatically. At the end of the day the only expectations that truly matter are my own and the ones of the people close to me. And maybe at this point we are old enough to adjust them and see what happens on Sunday.

Some photos from Grand Trail des Templiers 2023, my first long ultra experience :)
