I used to believe Ironman distance triathlons were the toughest endurance events on the planet (yes…XTRIs are still hardest but they are in a league of their own 🤪). Two weeks ago, I was proven wrong. 🙈🙉🙊

It was an incredible honor to officially represent the Stars and Stripes as a professional athlete on the international stage at Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships on Sept 6th in Zofingen, Switzerland! 🇺🇸 But wow…did that race kick my butt! And the stats speak for themselves:

🏃‍♀️10km trail run with 850ft of vert
🚴‍♀️ 150km bike with 7000ft of vert
🏃‍♀️ 30km trail run with 2000ft of vert
☀️ 90F, humid & sunny

Yeah…brutal is kind of an understatement! And my trashed legs are a testament to that! After rolling into T1 in 🥈, I almost immediately realized how hard it is to bike after an all out 10K (way harder than after swimming). 😵‍💫 I was in a lot of pain for 100km of the bike due to some nerve issues I’ve been dealing with for years, so dropped to 8th, but stayed positive and kept moving forward as best I could. It was very hot and humid to start run #2, but I put my head down, got to work, and ran the 3rd fastest run split to move up to 6th.

It was an incredibly tough day out there, but I’m really proud of my run splits and for staying positive and continuing to fight even when things were stacked against me. Not the result I know I’m capable of, but it was the best I could do with the day God gave me. So, I have to be satisfied, especially considering this was my 7th big race in 9 weeks (which included 3 trips to Europe and back) and my first solo Euro trip! 🤪

Thanks @powerman_zofingen for putting on an amazing event. I can confirm this race has rightfully earned its title as the hardest duathlon on the planet! I’m usually never sore after an Ironman, but my legs were completely trashed after this race! 🗑️

A huge thanks goes out to my amazing homestay, @cindynsta. You were so incredible, supportive and gave me the true Swiss experience, including kneipping, boccia, lots of amazing cheese and a post race trip to Lucerne! You feel like family and I’m honored that several people assumed I was your daughter! 😊🇨🇭

Let the haters hate.

I often get questioned, or critiqued, about why my training looks different than the standard build for a professional triathlete. Why the low cadence grinding? Why the unconventional bricks? Why higher volume?

The answer is simple: I’m not training for a standard Ironman race on a manicured course where you can rip down a flat highway in aero and fly down the pavement in fancy carbon shoes from one aid station to the next. I’m training to survive the most raw, unforgiving and untamed courses in the world, where the terrain and conditions are as brutal as the scenery is beautiful. There are no aid stations. There are no course markings. You might suffer alone in silence for hours on end. My races don’t take 9-10 hours; they could take up to 15 hours!

Extreme goals require extreme measures. When you are preparing for a dark, freezing swim against a tidal current, 4,000m of elevation gain on the bike, a technical trail marathon that finishes on the top of a mountain, plus extreme elements, the preparation should look different. It might even look “wrong” to an outside observer who doesn’t have the map to my destination. They don’t ask about my goals or provide constructive criticism. Instead they just say I’m doing it “wrong.”

To anyone else out there breaking the mold or chasing a scary goal: Don’t let the noise from the cheap seats distract you from the work you are doing in the arena. I’ve learned that when people question the “how” without ever bothering to ask about the “why,” it usually says more about their limits than yours.

Take it as a compliment. Indifference is the only true insult. If you were irrelevant, they wouldn’t care. If they’re watching closely enough to critique every move you make, it’s just a confused form of flattery. It means you are doing something right, something worth watching. Remember, criticism is just a fan club with a bad attitude. 😉🍿🥤

Trust your coach. Trust your training. Trust in God. Focus on your goals, not the haters.

And to all the lurkers & unsolicited critics: Thank you for the free rent in your brain. I’ll try to put on a good show 😉😜🤪

Now back to work! Head down. Eyes ahead. 💪
