A note from Grassroots Concerts Artistic Director, Kelley Smith: Happy September! We’d love to be announcing a fall lineup just about now, but for the time we must put our series on hold. Over the summer, I made the difficult decision to step away from my role with Grassroots. Though my time as director was short, it was a humongous joy to produce two seasons of beautiful shows in the lakes area. It’s a work that I truly believe in. I gave it my best, as did all our volunteers, and you all showed up. Thank you. I’m just not able to sustain the energy that Grassroots needs and deserves at this time, on top of my own music activities, and mothering. We are hopeful that Grassroots has a future as wondrous and rich as its history. Stay tuned! In the meantime, we’re sharing a few photo memories of our past year of music and community in Nisswa, MN. We’re grateful! -Kelley Smith And below is a note from our board of directors: Grassroots Concerts Fall 2026 season of concerts is on hold. In the spring of 2025 Grassroots Concerts announced that the concert series was ending with the resignation of Artistic Director Dawn Stattine. Local musician Kelley Smith, who performed for Grassroots in the spring of 2023, felt strongly that the long-running series needed to continue. She wanted to make sure that there would be a venue for touring folk artists in central MN, so she stepped forward and agreed to take on the role of artistic director. Kelley produced two successful seasons of concerts in the fall of 2025 and spring 2026. After spring season, Kelley informed the board that she was resigning from Grassroots to concentrate on her own music and her family. While our concerts are on hold this fall, Grassroots board and volunteers will meet to plan for the future of Grassroots Concerts, date to be announced. If you’ve enjoyed our Grassroots Concerts, consider getting involved as a volunteer or board member to help insure that our long-running concert series which began in 1988 continues into the future. Sincerely, Grassroots Board

6500+ followers on the gram? Holy cannoli COOL! Perhaps it’s time for a lil reintroduction post… Hi!👋 My name is Jillian Rae & in a nutshell I am an indie musical artist. Which sounds super awesome (it is!) & glamerous (it can be but I will admit I am typing this post in my sleep shirt & underwear so make of that what you will). And also, to be real with you & peel back the curtain a little bit— doing this hashtag music life as a career is more like 10 little hustlers in a trench coat. And I suppose for an adhd riddled millenial gal like me, that’s why it works? 🙃😆 SO HEY go check out my music & listen to one of my 4 albums or umpteen singles anywhere you can find music on Al Gore’s Internet™️ (or in the Lincoln my Bye-0 will get you there) + come out to a live show! OR go check out my folk trio @corpsereviverband (the world’s only tribute to Harry Smith’s anthology of american folk music). OR check out my top notch recording studio @clubhousestudiomn (that I built & operate with my hot & talented husband @ejmarti ) for all of your recording / production / finishing / rehearsal needs. OR let me know if you need some baller string parts / vocal harmonies / arrangement work on your next recording. OR hit me up if you’d like to do some 1-on-1 musical study (violin, voice, songwriting, p much all the instruments U don’t have to blow into, pedagogy, mentorship coaching). 🎤🎻🎧 I’m so glad you’re here, in this little corner of the matrix! And hey if you wanna be a super real one, comment & let me know how you found me + help share my work with some friends, will ya? ✨🙏✨ xo💋J #music #indieartist #singersongwriter #recordingstudio #pedagogy

This year we focused our Blue Ox coverage on individual experiences of attendees, artists and volunteers (see yesterday’s article The Ins and Outs of Blue Ox). But Tom also took loads of amazing concert photos of an insane 23 sets, so we couldn’t resist doing a companion piece! These are just 19 of them (and it STILL isn’t all the acts at the festival, just the ones we could get to), so be sure and check them all out on our Music Distillery blog (link in bio). . #blueoxmusicfestival #adventuresinamericana #livemusicisbetter

Day 3 at Blue Ox was loaded, as you’ll see from this barrage of photos. Like an amazing album, the setlist and order of songs matter. And this day, the order of these bands really clicked for me. Corpse Reviver Band was first on the Backwoods Stage. A big of humor, lots of smiles, and an old timey charm that just puts ya in a good mood. I think I can say that I’d been waiting for Molly Brandt to play at Blue Ox for a whole year. When last year rained out her set, this year had perfect skies and an even bigger band to perform lots of new songs off the brand new album. It was worth the wait! Extra credit for bringing a trumpet to Blue Ox. I think I can say that I’d been waiting for Molly Brandt to play at Blue Ox for a whole year. Valerie June followed with another round of charm and charisma. Her storytelling between and during songs makes for an incredible connection to her as an artist and person. The Lowest Pair have a dynamic that keeps you glued to the stage. Stern, while soft, they lure you into their songs like a lullaby you don’t want to wake up from. Super trio I’m With Her fits perfectly in the pines of Blue Ox. Harmonies that soar, musicianship that shines, and songwriting that brings the best of all three stellar artists to the forefront. An unanimous agreement with everybody, the best band name of the festival Cigarette Picnic, brought a ton of curious fans to the back stage. Their three part harmonies and witty songs were plenty to savor and evoke huge applause from the crowd. Each vocalist has such a different tonal quality that it was impressive seeing them blend and balance each other out.
