If the C1 was Elvis in a sharp suit and the C2 an Apollo astronaut ordering a bourbon, the C3 was a bloke with a glorious moustache, an unbuttoned polyester shirt and a gold medallion arriving at Studio 54.

And perhaps that’s why it doesn’t always get the respect it deserves.

Launched in 1968 and shaped by the Mako Shark II concept, the C3 looked as though someone had taken a Coke bottle, injected it with testosterone and fitted a 427-cubic-inch V8. Early versions could be ordered with up to 435 advertised horsepower. Subtle it was not.

Then the 1970s happened.

Oil shocks, emissions rules, safety regulations and rising insurance costs descended on Detroit like four policemen arriving at a particularly good party. Horsepower fell across America. By 1975, the base Corvette’s 350 V8 produced just 165 hp. Part of the apparent collapse came from the switch from gross to net horsepower ratings—but the performance loss was very real.

Yet the Corvette didn’t die.

The C3 adapted. Its chrome bumpers gave way to body-coloured designs. Its T-tops became a signature. In 1978 came the large fastback rear window. And while other famous muscle cars disappeared or changed beyond recognition, the Corvette simply kept going.

For 15 model years, the C3 carried the Corvette through one of the most turbulent periods in American motoring. It even reached a record 53,807 sales in 1979.

The C1 created the legend. The C2 became the poster car.

The C3 made sure there was a future.
