The other day with @deepwaterhawaii we came across what we were hoping was just some trash we could take out of the ocean. What we found was one of the more heartbreaking scenes I’ve witnessed on the water.

Tied to this empty bleach bottle was an oceanic whitetip shark, a critically endangered species that is protected at the state and federal level. The shark had clearly struggled while on the line causing it to noose and ended up strangling itself.

Jugging is a practice some fishermen use to occupy a shark and prevent it from being able to pursue their catch. Sharks that have been jugged tend to die or starvation, exhaustion, or a combination of both.

We are lucky that here in Hawaii we don’t see things like this very often, especially now that we’ve become the only state in the US to officially ban killing sharks. However, it clearly still occurs. And I want to be clear that not all fishermen are monsters or don’t respect the ocean. Hawaii has one of the coolest and most ocean-connected communities of fishermen I’ve ever experienced. But we as fishermen need to still do and encourage better.
