As a child there was nothing Felicia Leatherwood wanted more than long, flowy hair. But Felicia’s short afro grew up and out, not down. Her father who styled Felicia’s hair in her mother’s place, often didn’t know his own strength, and would rip Felicia’s delicate strands as he combed through her hair. At a young age, Felicia internalizes her hair as something to be managed, tamed, instead of a source of pride.

As hair trends come and go, Felicia’s beloved Jherri curl is replaced by every braided style in the book. She even tries her hand at weaves and relaxers. Felicia finds she loves doing hair so much she leaves her high-paying corporate job to enroll in beauty school and lands a hot new job at a salon where celebrities breeze through to freshen up their look. It isn’t long until Felicia is styling her first celebrity client. Felicia’s love of hair takes her around the world, to movie sets and several red carpets.

In Root Therapy, Felicia shares her journey of hair positivity, which opens the door to a beautiful spiritual journey of self-love. As a celebrity stylist and natural hair educator, Felicia has made it her life’s mission to share the message of hair acceptance. Complete with exercises that show you the merits of owning one’s complete self, Felicia encourages you to embrace your natural hair.

Some stories start at the salon chair.
Others start at the root. 🤎

For years, I’ve had the honor of helping people care for their hair, but Root Therapy is about so much more than hair. It’s about identity, healing, self-love, culture, confidence, and the stories we carry with us.

This book is deeply personal. It holds lessons from my journey, wisdom from women around the world, moments of laughter, truth, tenderness, and the realization that our hair has never just been hair.

Root Therapy: How to Love Your Hair (and Find Yourself) is officially coming August 11, 2026.

Co-written with the brilliant @corynnec and published by @simonbooks

Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. I cannot wait to share this with you all. Pre-orders, conversations, book tour moments, healing, and community are just beginning.

The latest book available for The Advanced Reader’s Club, an expression of The Compound Collective, is @felicialeatherwood’s Root Therapy: How to Love Your Hair (and Find Yourself) a personal and culturally necessary work of nonfiction from one of the women who helped shape the natural hair movement. The book is co-written with Corynne Corbett (@corynnec).

At a time when relaxers carried the weight of acceptance, professionalism, desirability, and belonging, Felicia’s work helped Black women and girls imagine a different relationship to their hair and bodies.

Root Therapy is an extension of this cultural labor, and I’m grateful to @lashandathegreat who advocated for it’s acquisition before she left for @tinyrepbooks. Without her early advocacy, I get to inherit this title and bring it to publication.

As part of The Compound Collective, The Advanced Reader’s Club is an intimate reading community created to provide readers with early access to books before they’re published. The Club also gives authors, like Felicia, the opportunity to engage directly with readers about their honest thoughts and experiences reading the book.

You don’t need money, a large social media following, or a blue check to join. You need a love for reading, a willingness to spread the word with your people if the book connects, and a Goodreads account.

There are only 35 books available, and the deadline to apply is Monday, May 25th at 6pm EST. Then on Tuesday, July 14 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm EST, Felicia Leatherwood will join the ARC meeting to discuss Root Therapy with us.

To join, reply “MURRAYS” in the comments and @advancedreadersclub will DM you the link. If you’ve already filed an application previously, DO NOT reapply.

Slide 4: Description copy for the read

As Women’s History Month draws to a close, we want to pause and honor every woman who has made Life In The Pause not just possible, but meaningful and impactful.

Building a community rooted in truth, healing, and collective care is no small thing. It takes more than vision. It takes people who show up — who buy the ticket, volunteer their time, share the post, send the encouraging word, and stand in the gap when the road gets bumpy and tough.

To every ally, supporter, partner, and cheerleader who has held this space with us: we see you. We are grateful for you. Your essence is in everything we’ve built so far.

History isn’t only made by those whose names are recorded. It’s also made by every woman who chooses to be present, who chooses awareness, acknowledgement, and action with their contributions. It’s made by those who believe that women (including midlife and older women) deserve better. Women of color deserve better. Black women deserve better.

Thank you. Keep shining.💫✨

Women’s History Month has me reflecting on the women who inspire me and who have paved the way. These ladies come to mind 💘This story is from our 55th Anniversary issue last year and it celebrates the beauty journeys of (some of the) former ESSENCE beauty/lifestyle Editors. Of course we had to have former Beauty & Fashion Director @blakelawren pen this one as well 🤍 on set felt like a beauty family tree lol. Grateful to you all. (Shot by @mylesloftin 💘)
