Breathing new life into a classical art form 🎭

Cosmia Opera Collective is a student-run organization that focuses on promoting contemporary works by women and other underrepresented creatives.

Founded in 2024, @cosmiaoperaco produces operas from the ground up, developing the music and libretto, sourcing costumes, and designing lighting and choreography—all on a shoestring budget.

“the virgin mary and mary magdalene have died and are now teenagers again, stuck in the liminal space between heaven and earth: a teenage girl’s bedroom. in this purgatory, all that they can do to pass the time is reenact and reflect on their shared trauma and their relationships – with men, with womanhood, and with themselves.”

This spring @cosmiaoperaco produced the fully staged premiere of I DID, DID I?, a chamber opera by Liza Sobel Crane. It was an honor to sing the role of Woman 2 and bring this incredibly important story to life

This weekend was a dream come true. Often as composers, we spend YEARS writing an opera hoping it gets performed - let alone having a second staged performance. Thank you to @cosmiaoperaco, all the performers, instrumentalists, movement actors, directors, lighting and more who made this production possible. I’m still very impressed that undergrads performed my opera so well because it is a challenging work. Thank you to all my friends and family who came to show.

The first four photos are from after both Friday and Saturday’s performances. The fifth photo is the two singers, @claire.oshaughnessy and @isabel.joy, the conductor, @jason_gluck and me.

Photos from last night’s dress rehearsal of my opera, I DID, DID I?. @cosmiaoperaco will perform it TONIGHT, Friday, April 4th and tomorrow, Saturday, April 5th at 7pm at the Ryan Opera Theater. The performances are free and open to the public. I hope to see you there.

As a composer, we spend a lot of time alone writing music. I spent 1.5 years writing I DID, DID I?. However, opera really does “take a village.” From the singers, instrumentalists, director, lighting, to movement actors, seeing everyone come together to bring my opera to the stage has been a moving experience.
