Pretty basic sushi lunch right? That’s a lie, not really! To get to the point where I was comfortable having a meal at this restaurant: 1️⃣ I had to break the ice with the hostess and ask what they considered gluten free on their menu and the precautions that the establishment takes 2️⃣ Once our server arrived - asked the same questions again just to be sure 3️⃣ I took it one step further and politely approached the sushi chef to ask about possible gluten contamination, gluten ingredients, and how he will keep these away from my safe foods ⁉️⁉️ He ensured me that there would be no gluten containing ingredients on his prep station. The gluten ingredients were only in the sauces that were squeezed out of containers that were behind him. Ok, a sigh of relief. At this point I heard someone sitting close by me snicker at my questions! Yes, she snickered! And guess what? I don’t care, and I can’t care! My health comes first, this is not the time to be shy. In the first days of diagnosis there was shame, anxiety and embarrassment when it came to asking the questions, no one wants to appear to be difficult ! But nowadays no one else’s opinions of what I have to do to ensure my safety, especially those of strangers really matters. #SelfAdvocacy takes some backbone, practice it. It’s #SelfLove, practice that too. By advocating for yourself you help food establishments understand the seriousness of food allergies (some can be deadly), food sensitivities and conditions like Celiac Disease. #LoveThySelf and enjoy a meal out with piece of mind that you’re food is safe! Happy eating, Ciao! - the gluten free mami
