They say it takes a village, but I don’t think people truly understand what that means until they witness one.

Every single person in this post has a full life. Careers. Families. Responsibilities. Deadlines. Their own challenges. Yet somehow, they still found time to answer a phone call, make a connection, donate a dress, sponsor a tux, style hair, apply makeup, take photos, provide transportation, offer resources, or simply ask, “How can I help?”

None of them had to.

There was no personal gain. No expectation of recognition. Just people choosing kindness because someone else’s child mattered to them.

This year’s prom giveaway was bigger than a dance. Through our partnering with COTS and the Detroit Police Department, we had the privilege of supporting several seniors who were experiencing homelessness or significant hardship. While many students were counting down to prom, some were wondering where they would sleep, what they would wear, or how they would make it through another day.

But because a village showed up, they were able to experience something every person deserves to feel celebrated, seen, and worthy.

That is what generosity looks like.

It isn’t about giving when it’s convenient. It’s choosing to make room for someone else, even when your own calendar is full. It’s understanding that the smallest act of kindness can become a lifelong memory for someone else.

To every person who gave your time, your talent, your resources, your connections, your services, your donations, and your heart, THANK YOOOU. Thank you for saying yes. Thank you for following through. Thank you for reminding these young people that they are deeply loved by a community that believes in them.

This is what a village looks like. And because of you, these students will remember so much more than prom night—they’ll remember that when they needed people most, a village came.

At The People’s Potluck, everybody gets a seat at the table! TODAY! Come and create art, sing with us, eat an inclusive hot meal, check out our free store, and pick up some zines, stickers, and the latest copy of Riverwise Magazine!

Detroit’s own, One Single Rose, is reading a poem! Come hang out with Artist Konstance Patton Keneegokeshek! She is setting up a table for you all to gather around and create. Rocketman will be singing us a song, Tiger Bouquet will be raising our spirits with rousing music, and Singing Resistance Detroit (that’s us!) will lead songs that you can carry with you into your community for bringing people together, regulating emotions, and shouting dissent at upcoming protests and demonstrations.

We all are fighting against so much in the facing of rising authoritarianism, government violence against our neighbors, systemic racism, and a cost of living crisis. Today, The People’s Potluck is part of our fight FOR community, showing up for each other, and creativity in that fight!

We hope to see you today from 1-4 pm at the Central United Methodist Church on the Corner of E Adams and Woodward in Downtown Detroit on the second floor. Come as you are! Graphic on a black background featuring a large, hand-drawn red heart outline in the center. At the top, green script text reads "Today!" Inside the heart, bold yellow uppercase text reads "THE PEOPLE’S POTLUCK." Below this, green script text reads "Everyone gets a seat at the table!" The bottom right corner contains white block text: "CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 1–4 PM; WOODWARD AVE & E ADAMS ST, DETROIT; EVERYONE IS WELCOME!"
