"PIVOT 32"

Students: Cade Cotter @cottercade & Peter Getsos @peter.taky

Syracuse University School of Architecture M.Arch @syr_arch_grad
ARC607 Comp Studio, Spring 2026
Professor: Roger Hubeli

Consultants: Cemex Switzerland, Element AG

Scale 1/4" = 1' - 0"
Materials: Foam, 3D print, basswood sheets, museum board, wood dowels

A community-centric building located on Inseli Park in Luzern, Switzerland.

The architecture explores the atmospheric tension between light and shadow. Our experimental, folded-concrete structural system acts as a perforated tectonic curtain; by "pulling back" this heavy veil, we reveal the interior performances or frame the external landscape.

This spatial threshold manages the flow of light and people, alternating the focus of the "performance" based on the program: in the bar and panorama, the focus is interiority; in the cafe and exhibition space, the focus is the external site.

Model of our Pre-Cast High Performance Concrete folded-panel beam design. We tested the folding of concrete during its curing process at Cemex in Brügg, Switzerland over Spring Break.

The beam is seated within keystones on spherical ball joints which allows pivoting of the beam within the columns, while being held in place through compression.

The folding strategy allows for a strong yet light beam design, with the top and bottom of the beam being cast from the same mold.

The two parts are bolted together, with spacers between them, the CLT floor structure is then bolted on top. This structural exploration acted as the driving factor of our Integrated Studio project: Pivot 32

Studio Final Review from Fall ‘25. Joint project by @cottercade & @peter.taky Final iteration of our coastal tetrapod grid hybrid system nesting data centers in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Storm water is absorbed into the structural grid, acting as a barrier in times of rising sea levels and storms, protecting the waterfront behind it. Within the pods are systems of data centers, and public program.

Studio Mid Review from Fall ‘25. Joint project by @cottercade & @peter.taky A coastal tetrapod grid hybrid system nesting data centers in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Storm water is absorbed into the structural grid, acting as a barrier in times of rising sea levels and storms, protecting the waterfront behind it. Excess water is stored in the adjacent grain terminal and used to cool the data center’s server racks. The entire structure becomes an index of the amount of water coming into the site. ‘I-X Paneled Frame’, Frogtown, Los Angeles, 2025

Scale: 1/4”=1’-0”
Model materials: Illustration board, wooden dowels, wooden strips, metal mesh

Description: I-X Paneled Frame is a Community Center for Reuse and Repair for the LA based company SUAY who specialize in garment recycling and upcycling. Using underlying logics of the surrounding neighborhood of Frogtown, a design strategy of varying levels of privacy and public space was created. This resulted in open warehouse / workshop spaces, dynamic classrooms / theater spaces, as well as a transformable, variable panel system in the center of the site.

The main focus of this project was constant development through physical models. The semester was spent testing developing systems which could be translated into large scale buildings. The system that was decided on for this project was one of a series of panels passing through a rigid axial frame.
