We’ll have Manhattan! Announcing a wearable love letter to New York City from @mbierut and @taliasaccount. To celebrate a century in business, @echonewyork is inviting 100 creators across design, art, fashion and culture to each design a limited-edition silk scarf for its #Echo100 collection. Each is printed in a numbered edition of 100, and $100 from each sale is donated to a nonprofit of the creator’s choice. Michael and Talia collaborated on an all-typographic scarf to benefit @92ndstreety, for whom they designed a new brand identity in 2022. The scarf is woven with lyrics from “Manhattan,” the classic 1925 song by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, which namechecks iconic places from the Bronx to Bowling Green, from Canarsie to Coney Island. The scarf’s typography is drawn directly from the 92NY wordmark, which was redesigned by Bierut and Cotton in 2022. The scarf uses the custom typeface created by Jeremy Mickel of @mckltype for the 92NY logo. 92NY Didi is a digitized extension of the French neoclassical Didot family, inspired by the Freeman Craw design created for CBS in 1966 and ITC Didi, drawn by Tom Carnese four years later. The 92NY logo, however, appears nowhere on the scarf. Instead, the design reproduces the place names from the song in a black-and-white pattern inspired by the textiles of midcentury master Alexander Girard. Order yours at the link in our bio! When I saw that Talia Cotton would be speaking in Dallas, I knew I had to go! In case you’re not familiar with her work, Talia’s area of expertise fuses technology and design - a concept that scares a lot of designers including myself. Think motion design + branding + code + emerging tech. She shared the beauty behind the craft of coding and how much research, development, and love goes into each project. Some that piqued my interest: The Brocade Unknot USDC System Health I hung onto every word in her presentation and left feeling inspired and curious. Thank you to @thedsvc for such a wonderful event!

Montréal, you were good to us. We made the trip over for @offf.montreal where Oli took the stage to tell the story behind Uncommon. The good bits, the hard bits, the work we’re proud of and plenty of what happened in between. More than anything, it was an honest account of the last five years and the people, projects and pivotal moments that have shaped the studio along the way. The talk was one part of it. We met some brilliant people from across the creative world, caught up with familiar faces, spent time with members of our team we don’t get to see nearly enough, and made the most of Montréal in between. It’s pretty special to take something we’ve built together in Melbourne and share it on the other side of the world. A story about depth, care and quality, respecting every craft and showing love to the parts others might walk past. We came home with new friends, plenty of ideas and very glad we made the trip.
