built to last

a collection of clothing connected by workwear, durability, and repair. there is plenty of kapital here, whose approach to denim, americana, and traditional japanese repair techniques makes it particularly good at bringing these ideas together. western jackets, boots, bandanas, and denim sit alongside boro pieces from kapital and refloslab, while repaired french chore jackets and vintage german military trousers show that this relationship with durable clothing extends far beyond japan.

what i find most interesting is how repair changes the way we look at a garment. these pieces were made to withstand work, and the repairs become evidence that they actually did. patches, fading, worn fabric, and visible stitching add another layer of history while often making the garment more interesting than it was when new. boro itself came from repeatedly repairing and reinforcing worn textiles to extend their useful life, and kapital has carried that logic into contemporary clothing.

the undercover deconstructed trenchcoat fits naturally into the selection as well, despite coming from a very different design tradition. its patchwork construction and added pins give an otherwise refined garment the same sense of accumulation and individuality found in the older workwear. across all of these pieces, the common thread is clothing that feels better when it has been used, repaired, altered, and made personal.

I rarely ever make it out to San Francisco, so today we’re doing it right 🙌🏾

Walking the city, stopping by one of my favorite spots—Cotton Sheep—to see what new Kapital pieces they just got in 👀

If you’re ever in the city, this is a place you have to check out!
