Submitted by @_rumon: "Growing up in the timber town of Port Alberni, in the middle of Vancouver Island, means connecting to the outside world requires a trip on Highway 4. This means I have taken hundreds of trips on this road, and so hundreds of times passed Cameron Lake. Each and every time I have cast my gaze at the wooden railway trestles visible across the lake, allowing romantic visions of past travel into the Island’s heart - visitors perhaps disembarking at the lake to visit its eponymous chalet, one of the lesser known of the historic chain of CP hotels - flit through my mind. Many of those times I also have scanned the hills rising steeply above the tracks, the trees appearing smaller than those just down the road at the famous Cathedral Grove, but beautiful still. Never, though, did I think to wonder whether there were trails up there. I had no idea that, in fact, with a bit of bushwhacking, trails leading up-slope from either end of the lake could be linked to complete a traverse of the ridge, topping out at 908m Mt. Wesley along the way. Today, to celebrate one of my non-familial brother’s birthday, accompanied by another brother, I found out. And, finally, 39 years after first looking out at the wooden trestles above the lake, stepped foot on them, and back in time. Here’s to continuing to seek, to explore, and to finding #microadventure in our backyards, and to learning and living the history of the places we call home. #thisismywild: Homeward bound to complete a hustle of the Mt. Wesley Traverse, Central Vancouver Island, British Columbia"
