mane I saw the first text on a meme and had to cop it. because ngl life has been magical. and I’m so lucky to be surrounded by magical humans who make it worth living. at the end of the day I’ve been hella fortunate to receive tenfold of what I’ve given. ✨ I’m staying the course, speaking the truth and remaining joyful.

Happy heavenly birthday to my mother♥️she loved us soooo much! John and I have been busy going thru our parents things since we retired and it’s very fitting that just yesterday john got us a momento of lake days with my mom and Poppa Blue. We’re not on the water today but will be soon thanks to our high school friend Roff Hayes and many others at R J’s Outboard Sales and Service!

takes joy to combat pain. takes ashes and destruction to rebuild. takes community to understand unconditional love.

the spirit, the flow, my chosen family, my people, my hope and joy is what I continue to build and become. passion and fire and grit takes joy.

JOY. IS. RESISTANCE. #thoughtsfromoverthehedge #shotbybeks #thehedgephotography

One thing I’m gonna do is always speak on my love for Memphis.〽️2018: I left a job needing healing from isolation; seeking restoration and safety. A friend rang me, said I could crash in Binghampton and she hooked me up with a teaching job. I sometimes hesitate to call moments like those miracles, but I was praying for a way out and the path was so clear. Thanks to my journalism degree from @johnbrownuniversity, I was educated, but thanks to @quitassmith I was educated WELL. Until summer ‘19 I called Binghamton my community and understood unconditional love. Our street accepted this traumatized indigenous/white woman. We’d have bonfires, Mr. Eric would mow the lawn, Carlita would offer me a cigarette, and Steve next-door called (and still calls) me ‘Spice Girl.’ I spent ALL my free time, connecting and building relationships with fellow creatives, models, and photographers throughout the city. I was 100% myself, a mess, a clown, a creative, a trauma survivor, and I was 100% accepted. All of me was embraced in a hug reminiscent of my Grandma Eleanor Hedges and Sylvia Conrad. I believe both of their spirits guided me here. Though I left the city for a time, I returned to host a huge photo-meetup in 2020 and it was as if I had never left. I returned Dec 2022, I’ve never been more joyful.

IG limits characters so abridged version: The fact is…if you genuinely love Memphis, Memphis will love you back. Loving a city takes time and investment as every other relationship. Love is taking the time to understand a city’s history, its triumphs, its wounds, its joy, its trauma, and LOVING it anyway. For me it was working for @projtrantn and loving the college students, students and families we served.

Recently it’s appreciating the job opportunities I’ve had with @archimania and now @theorionfinancial! Understanding and respecting Memphis has ALWAYS had its unique language, dance, water, etc. The spirit of this city is unmatched, its grit and tenacity. This is my home. You hear me mane? Stay joyful mane. As for me? Ima keeping choosing 901.

This photoshoot started out by me just offering to take silly goofy photos of my friends and their beautifully designed home. It ended up with a ring, an unexpected surprise and my two friends becoming fiancés!💍
