There are a lot of things I want to accomplish in this life, but at the end of the day, this is what matters most to me:

To be a lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ.

To keep choosing Him when life is good, hard, and unknown. To keep learning, growing, and becoming more like Him and hopefully help someone else find that same joy along the way. 🤍

There are so many mixed emotions rolling through a bowhunter’s mind after releasing an arrow on an animal—adrenaline, excitement, uncertainty, anticipation, respect, and a whole lot more. Sometimes those emotions can be overwhelming as you can see in my eyes and face.

There's a couple components to this story that made this shot unique and challenging

First, the bull was much closer than I had anticipated. I found myself stuck in the wide open, motionless and in awkward position for what seemed like an eternity. I had some of his cows 30–40 yards away from me, so any movement would have blown it. After about 5 minutes I was able to move next to some small trees a few yards away.
Then came the shot. As bowhunters, we’re always anticipating the moment we can draw when the elk’s head/eyes disappear behind a bush or tree.

I finally got that opportunity and came to full draw. Then the bull stopped, Three different times, and every time, he stopped in a spot where I didn’t have a shot.
I held at Full Draw, and held, and held some more. By the time the shot finally presented itself, I had been at full draw for at least three minutes.

My arms were smoked, my bow arm felt like it had a lead weight hanging off it. When I got the window I needed, because of that fatigue I really had to concentrate on lifting my bow high enough to get my 50-yard pin where it needed to be.

Even though I have never taken a Shot IQ course but have seen many of Joel Turners video's, I heard Joels voice in my head. One of the things he talks about over and over is talking yourself through the shot.
LIFT…...I told myself, lift the bow, get that 50-yard pin settled, stay focused. I was completely and totally in the moment when I released my arrow.

My shot was well placed and the tracking job was fairly simple but I still had all Adrenaline, Excitement and Uncertainty rolling through my head.

For me, what makes bowhunting so special, It’s everything that leads up to that one moment—and everything you feel afterward. I was fortunate to have both my hunting partners @clockpaul and @christopher_aco nearby for the recovery, break down & pack out in the dark in Grizzly Country. 🙏

Last evening in Elk Camp 2026

it’s been a grind for the past 25 days, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Going home tired, but with my soul filled

Once again, it was great sharing Elk Kamp with @christopher_aco and @clockpaul

Today’s morning hunt started off pretty nice as we came across a beautiful meadow with some wallows that looked like they had been recently used.
I let off a bugle and got an immediate response. A couple of minutes later, I bugled again, and this time the response came even faster—and much more combative—we estimated this bull to be about 200 yards away.

I stayed in the location where I had bugled from and had @christopher_aco move forward about 100 yards. Chris was now in position. I gave out another bugle and then heard some noise behind me. I was immediately on high alert thinking another Bull could be making his way in.

Over on my left side, about 22 yards away, I saw a dark figure moving through the tall grass. At first glance, I thought it might be a wolf, but I immediately recognized that head and snout as a Grizzly Bear.

Two cubs were leading and mama trailing last—all under 25 yards from me.

I immediately pulled out my bear spray and popped the safety off. Then I stepped out into the open so they could clearly see me. I yelled, “Grizzly bear!” so Chris would know what was happening, and I continued making noise, trying to get them to move away.

All three bears stood up on their haunches and looked at me trying to smell me and figure out what I was. Finally, the sow drop back down on all fours and turned away heading the other way. After more yelling and making noise, the cubs turned and ran to catch up with their mom.

The whole thing happened pretty damn quick.

I’m damn glad it turned out the way it did.

Just a couple days being in the Mountains. The first couple of Days started off strong, slowed down slightly and I think we’re ramping back up to Buglefest time.
Yesterday I ran into another Bowhunter @capra_acre in the field and his string of Pack Goats. Pretty damn cool!

It’s time to bring the woods alive with Screaming Bulls, I’m Ready!!

Would you know what to do if you crossed paths with a bear or mountain lion? 🐻🏔️

🌲Wildlife encounters can happen when you least expect them, so being prepared matters.

🎒I always keep my @counter_assault bear spray easily accessible when I’m out exploring.

⚠️ If you’ve never practiced using bear spray, consider this your sign to educate yourself, learn how to use it, and practice before you hit the trail.

Have you ever had to use bear spray on the trail? ⤵️
