Why was I so excited to catch @koqueengirls, @film_and_gender, @xk_scenario, and @couragemother at @patchwork.dc yesterday? Not because XK is one of my absolute favorite local bands and I had been meaning to catch Courage Mother for a solid calendar year. Not because @wavedashdiy always puts on an amazing show. And not because I wanted to extend my streak of Massachusetts-oriented DMV gigs to 3 in a row. While those were all reasons for my desire to attend, greatest among them was my curiosity about its venue: what is this Patchwork space?

To prepare myself for the show, I wrote a whole bunch of questions to help me think about the space I was about to enter into, and what I look for in live music spaces in general.

Here are 20 questions, in the approximate order in which they came to mind, to reflect on a new live music space: Patchwork Edition!

Q1: What is its bathroom's character?

A1: Sparsely decorated but cozy, with a slight touch of liminality and a nice view onto Connecticut Ave.

Q2: What adorns the walls?

A2: Palestinian flag, patchwork letter tile Patchwork quilt, storage shelves with seafoam polaroid and cardboard boxes, 24 balls of yarn and 3 pairs of scissors, dangling coils of blue cable in a variety of locations, big orange plastic clock with white hands, cacti watering tracking poster, and community guidelines: “respect others, respect the space and equipment, and be chill and have fun.”

Q3: How does it sound in there?

A3: Loud, but DIY space loud as opposed to formal venue loud. Every instrument is audible and well-mixed.

Q4.1: What is the space's metaphorical temperature?

A4.1: Warm.

Q4.2: What is its literal temperature?

A4.2: Neutral to leans warm, with reasonable ventilation.

Q5: What do people do between sets?

A5: It’s a small room on the third floor of a building with nowhere else really to go, which combined with the comfortable atmosphere keeps everyone together in the space for the duration of the show, including between sets.

Q6: How obvious from afar is it that it is a live music space?

A6: You’d never know it was there if you weren’t looking for it.
