After a lumpy (to say the least) start we headed out of town with new front rotors & pads. First night in Buffalo. Second night on Illinois/Iowa line. Quick stop at WFM in Des Moines (the only WFM in Iowa). Landed in Emporia Monday afternoon. Kathy is doing some work (thanks Henry for the Starlink suggestion). We will bike into town from the Fairgrounds and check out the scene. Maddy Nutt live podcast @ 4pm.

After being discharged from an eating disorder treatment center, my oldest daughter started to volunteer at @maryland_therapeutic_riding, and it was there that she met a very special pony named Roux. They used to listen to Taylor Swift together out in the pasture and created a beautiful bond. A lot of what my daughter has achieved since their meeting can be attributed to Roux’s healing presence in her life.

When Roux passed unexpectedly, my daughter was given her saddle, and it sat in our garage for years. When we were organizing for her move this summer, I jokingly told her that I was going to turn it into a piece of furniture for her. When I was researching the feasibility of actually attempting that, I came across the page for @cowbellleather2021 They didn’t make furniture, but they did make exquisite bags from old saddles.

I sent Katherine a message telling her the story of Roux’s saddle, and she responded immediately saying that she’d be honored to repurpose it into a bag for my daughter’s 21st birthday. She texted me photos throughout the process and was absolutely delightful to work with.

This week my daughter turned 21 and she received her little piece of Roux. She’ll be using her beautiful bag as her “work bag” when she’s treating patients as part of her clinical psychology PhD. How far she has come and how far she will go, all with the help of a special little pony!

Katherine, thank you for creating the most perfect 21st birthday gift! xo
