🖼️ Frances Anne Hopkins. "Woman Standing by a Pond," watercolour, 22.9 x 34.3 cm 🇬🇧 Born on February 2, 1838, in London, UK, Frances Anne Hopkins embarked on an incredible journey that would deeply enrich Canadian art. Her path led her to Canada, where she married Edward Hopkins, a distinguished official with the Hudson's Bay Company. 🍁 Between 1858 and 1870, Hopkins embraced the beauty and vibrancy of Canada, immersing herself in its inspiring landscapes and rich culture. Shortly after her marriage, she and her husband settled in Lachine, Quebec, where they joyfully welcomed two sons by 1861. Their story continued in Côte-des-Neiges, near Montreal, where the family grew again with the birth of another child in 1863. 🛶 Hopkins found endless inspiration in the Canadian wilderness, often joining her husband on his travels—most notably an unforgettable canoe journey to Lake Superior in 1869. 🚢 Though their Canadian chapter came to a close in 1870 with a return to England, Hopkins’ time in Canada undoubtedly shaped her creative journey, leaving behind a legacy connected to the heart of this land. 🎨 Throughout her life, Hopkins remained deeply connected to her Canadian inspiration, continuing to paint subjects that captured the nation's spirit. Her remarkable talent gained international recognition, with several of her works gracing the prestigious walls of the Royal Academy in London. Today, she is celebrated for her iconic paintings of voyageur canoes, a powerful testament to Canadian history and heritage, many of which are proudly preserved in the collection of Library and Archives Canada for all to discover. 🌹She passed away in England, United Kingdom, on March 5, 1919. 🌎 Her paintings are held in esteemed institutions, including the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the McCord Museum in Montreal, and the Minnesota Historical Society in Minneapolis, among others. 📷 @cowleyabbott . . #FrancesAnneHopkins #CanadianArtDaily #CanadianArt #CanadianPainting #WomenArtists

🖼️ John Der, "I Got it, I Got it..." 1990, Oil on board, 23.75 x 29.5 ins (60.3 x 74.9 cms) 🍁 John Der was a Quebec based artist who was born in Canora, Saskatchewan, in 1926. 🚢 John was a sailor in the merchant navy in his youth. 👨🏻‍💼 He lived in Rosemere, north of Montreal, where he supported his family by working as an insurance agent and broker. 🎨 At the age of fifty-five, during a trip to Florida in 1982, he decided to devote himself full-time to painting. 🖌️Like many an artist, he spent the first few years of his artistic career trying to find representation in the art world. John soon found his niche market and became a well-respected and sought-after artist. 🏆 John Der's art captured the everyday lives of those around him, drawing inspiration from their triumphs, joys, heartaches, and setbacks. As a keen observer, he skillfully translated the emotions of his subjects onto the canvas. Whether depicting athletes, revellers, or dancers, Der was interested in showcasing humorous glimpses into people's lives and their feelings. He paid particular attention to small details, knowing they would naturally bring a smile to the viewer's face. 🌹 John Der passed away in 1996. 📷 🎯 @cowleyabbott . . #JohnDer #CanadianArtist #CanadianArtDaily #BaseballPaintings #Autumn
