FISHING EXPEDITIONS WITH BLUE.

Assume he will be leaving soon for warmer climates but as the ponds have not yet frozen over and there are still plenty of fish to be had, he has been lingering stocking up, so to speak, for that trip south (Photo #1 & Photo #2).

Definitely will miss this youngster when he travels south.

A little fall magic (or maybe just luck)!

After catching a glimpse of a female lynx crossing in front of us, we spotted her hiding in the grass. That’s when one of our boys called out, “There are two lynx... no, three!”

We never managed to get all three in a single frame, but we did capture this beautiful moment with one of the smallest lynx kittens we’ve ever seen.

Have you ever heard the rumor that “If you see a Bullsnake, there’s no Rattlesnakes around” Unfortunately for some this rumor is false. Bullsnakes and Rattlesnakes do share the same habitat and often even share the same dens to hibernate in, rather peacefully.

Winter is almost here and while this grizzly bear should have been pushed further down in the valley from the recent snowfall, we found her higher up digging roots under the snow. We also learned she has an injured cub (who was out of sight), but we could hear calling in the distance, which is why the snow never pushed them down. Hopefully, they can find the calories needed before hibernation and the little bear is able to recover over the winter.

Listen to the crows

I was walking through a small Willow forest on the edge of a small lake. Well almost at my breaking point of sensory overload from the gulls going mental over water. Then I heard a group of crows start going off behind me, I turned around and walked towards the noise and bam. Drawn to the moved my eyes caught this annoying mamma snap her neck towards me. I’d walked right by her, without the crows drawing me back I would have never seen her.

This was a very large bobcat, over 24 inches at the shoulder.

Thought he was looking for prey in the grass but he may have been scenting a female.

Photos taken with a long lens & the photos were a result of his time spent sniffing through the grasses.

We had an excellent day on Willow Creek introducing the ChangeMakers from CPAWS Southern Alberta chapter to the wonderful world of biomonitoring!

Any day spent in a creek is a good one, but it becomes even more special when you learn about the little critters living there! Benthic macroinvertebrates (BMIs), or water bugs, are an incredibly useful organism for biomonitoring, and the different types of BMIs present in a stream tell us a lot about the conditions there. Plus, they just look really, really cool 😎

By taking a sample of these water bugs to identify, as well as water chemistry testing like pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and more, the students put together how the environment and beings living there influence each other and contribute to healthy, accessible water for all.

A morning birding walk with @j.a.m.e.s.e.p.h.o.t.o along the Bow River. The light was dreamy, the air was full of bugs, wild roses were still in bloom and Cedar Waxwings were moving through the trees.

I wanted to capture a little more of their environment this time, rather than focusing only on the birds themselves. Cedar Waxwings are often found around woodland edges and areas near water, where fruiting trees and shrubs provide food and insects are plentiful during Calgary’s warmer months.

A little reminder that the habitat deserves a photograph too. 🌿

Later isn’t a place you get to, and “someday” became a place I stopped believing in.

You don’t get to alpine-start twice. The window opens at 3AM dark and closes when the wind picks up, when the clouds roll in off the icefield, when the sun gets high enough to soften what you needed frozen. Every summit was a decision made before first light — go now, or never get it back.

I used to think there’d be a better version of the trip. Better weather, better legs, better reason. There isn’t. Later never comes, go now.
