[🇺🇸] Since deciding to take my work on Bembé do Mercado on an international journey, I’ve been moved by the way these images resonate with people.

Many arrive curious. Others are moved. Some are brought to tears, encountering a universe of symbols, gestures, gazes, and cosmologies they may never have experienced up close. A universe of knowledge and ways of being that, despite having been historically rendered invisible, remain alive in my community in Santo Amaro, Bahia.

With every encounter, I feel a deep sense of pride and a renewed conviction that turning my gaze inward was the right choice. It is from this place of memory, ancestry, and belonging that I set out to meet the world.

Bringing the local into the global is hard work, but necessary for someone who chooses to see bridges where others see borders.

Presenting Bembé in New York is also an affirmation that our communities are not merely objects of study. We are producers of knowledge, thought, and possible futures.

The exhibition BEMBE: The Feast of the King’s Eyes, presented at The City College of New York, was made possible by the coming together of people and institutions committed to art, memory, and cultural exchange.

My gratitude to the Government of Brazil, through the Ministry of Culture and the National Arts Foundation (Funarte), for supporting this project; to the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, The City College of New York, Herbert Seignoret, the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, the Department of Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Studies, the Black Studies Department, and the Consulate-General of Brazil in New York for making this encounter possible.

I’m grateful to everyone who walks alongside me, and above all, to my community, the very reason this work exists. Together, we keep turning the world into our shared home, one spacious enough for our differences, our memories, and our many ways of being.

BEMBÉ — The Feast of the King's Eyes is coming to New York.

A photography exhibition by Brazilian visual artist and researcher Roque Boa Morte, curated by Jamile Borges, PhD, Provost, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA).

The exhibition presents Boa Morte's photographic archive of the Bembé do Mercado, a century-old Afro-Brazilian celebration born in the aftermath of abolition within the Black communities of Santo Amaro, Bahia: a living expression of the Afro-diasporic experience, where memory, spirituality, and exchange converge.
