👷‍♂️The 2026 Geomatics Conference is happening this week broncos, THURSDAY OCT. 1ST!!

🧑‍🎓 As a surveying student, this is your best chance at securing an internship or even a career job if you are graduating soon! You don’t want to miss out if you can attend!!!

🐴 Underclassmen are encouraged to go as well even if you aren’t looking for an internship, talking to industry professionals or other students can benefit you in more ways than you can think!

🚨 There are plenty of guest speakers and groups with loads of experience and great talks lined up, don’t forget to check those out throw out the day as well!

High school interns Nina Xu and Junyan Zhang joined the AVL in June and have taken an autonomous robot from concept to build-ready design.

They proposed three designs and used a weighted decision matrix to select a four-legged walking robot that navigates using a rotating ultrasonic sensor. At their Critical Design Review last week they presented a full CAD model, an assembly animation, a risk assessment, and a build plan sourced almost entirely from existing lab inventory, with $35 in new parts.

Assembly and programming are next, with their final presentation on December 1.

Our first Tarkington Research Horizons talk was a success — thanks to everyone who joined.

Prof. Shokoufeh Mirzaei, Chair of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona, broke down where automation is headed: 4.3 million industrial robots running worldwide, warehouse robotics growing from $6.5B to $25.4B by 2034, and up to 2 million unfilled U.S. manufacturing jobs by the early 2030s.

The takeaway: the tech is arriving faster than the people who can run it.

Tarkington Research Horizons is our new monthly series bringing scholars into conversation with CPP’s business community. Next talk: October 1st.

Last Thursday, we had the opportunity to meet and connect with members of Cal Poly Pomona’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE)!

SWE is dedicated to promoting higher levels of education and professional achievement for students and future women engineers. It was a pleasure sharing more about our organization, the different projects we’re working on, and our commitment to protecting and improving the infrastructure of Riverside County.
